Shekou's great for expats who want a nice apartment, lots of nearby Western restaurants and good international schools for their kids.

OCT (Overseas Chinese Town) is a classy neighborhood with lots of bike paths and parks. It also has a metro stop =)

Huanggang is so close to the Hongkong border that you can actually walk there. Not as impressive on first glance as Shekou and OCT, but it's an active Hongkong-style neighborhood 24/7.

Futian is by far the best, especially if you need to travel to Hong Kong regularly through the quieter Huanggang checkpoint rather than Luohu. There are lots of apartments up and down, left and right of the stop at Fumin; Ren Ren supermarket and yes, it buzzes 24 hours. Coco Park shopping/restaurants and bars are just a 73 bus ride away.

it really depends what you are looking for.
Luohu has all the best sleeze,
Futian is more sterile
Nanhan is kind of in between Luohu and Futian
and then there is Shekuo which has too many expats for my liking but has good food.

Futian is the best.  Everything you need and the most upscale western style neighborhoods in Shenzhen, smack dab in between everything.
This is where I am moving in a few weeks after staying in hotels all over Shenzhen for the past year and seeing it all.

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
