Every Chinese person I meet seems to strongly advocate drinking hot water...whether it's in the morning for breakfast or when I'm tired or sick. It almost sounds like some magic cure for everything. Is there actually something to it or is it just a load of b/s.

it helps with digestion
if you think about how much oil we consume in our meals it makes sense.
and our body is 80% water so it is easly obsorbed
also if its -40 outside it is better than ice water
Who cares what they strongly advocate. These people think when you have sore muscles it's cause you have "cold air in your body."
The best temp to drink water is room. If it's hot it's got to cool down before being absorbed, if it's cold, it's gotta heat up. As close to 38 degrees as possible is best.

so if its -40 outside the room temp should be 38+ and then we can drink the water?
I know cold water would be to regulate the body temperature when you have a cold or fever. As far as hot water goes drinking warm drinks are also important. You can drink enough hot soupy water when you cook your ramen noodles next time.
Its all just rubbish hot or cold is the same, water is the same for your body

I read something online about the interaction of hot water on the nasal passages, but then again that article was counterbalanced with a statement similar to what Paul has written. In any case, it's surely better than Coca Cola.
I read that drinking hot water (especially with a slice of lemon) is used in detox diets, apparently it breaks down the fat in your body and helps to get rid of toxins. Whether it's true or not I have no idea.
It does have benefits....although I still prefer cold water myself.
Cleansing and Purification
Drinking hot water will increase the body temperature slightly, which in turn causes you to sweat in order to cool down the body. Sweating is a natural way to remove toxins from the body and it can improve your health. This sweating can be beneficial for the major organs in the body and it may help purify the blood stream.
Soothing for the Throat
If your throat is sore or you are a little congested, drinking hot water can be beneficial because it will soothe your throat and help to break up the congestion. Many singers use this trick before performing because it clears their throat before they sing.
Better Circulation
In order to deliver oxygen and nutrients on a cellular level, good circulation is needed. Drinking hot water improves circulation throughout the body.
Constipation Treatment
Slow bowels can be very uncomfortable and drinking hot water can actually get the intestines moving again. If you are constipated, drink a tall glass of hot water several times a day, and your body will be able to return to normal functioning again.
If you don’t like the taste of plain hot water, consider adding a little bit of tea or lemon. Many Asian cultures drink tea with their meals instead of cold water, which is beneficial for their health because of the temperature of the water and the antioxidants contained within the tea.
A Chinese person recently used the following analogy to explain the reason for drinking hot water. "If you were soaking in a bathtub full of hot water, would you like someone to suddenly throw in a bucket of ice cold water? No, because it would be a shock to your system". I'd never thought of it like that but it makes sense.

Not make sense. If I am very hot, I want a cold drink. If I drink hot water, I get hotter, If water is too hot, it will burn me. Drink hot water when you are cold will help warm you. If I am in hot bath and you throw ice water on me, I will beat you bad. Why you in bathroom? Oh sorry , is that your wife?
I would be very skeptical to any claim this has any benefit. If you have a normal person, weighing perhaps 60kg, drinking 25cl of cold water will not change the body temperature one bit. The temperature delta is insignificant if you take the volume of the body and the volume of a glass of water into consideration.
As far as I can tell the only reason for drinking warm water is if you are not used to cold, you might not like the feeling. This is just the reverse of the old myth that eating ice cream should be slimming as the body would burn more energy to restore the heat lost to the ice cream as opposed to how much energy the body would get from the sugar and fat in ice cream.
EXACTLY the same benefits as drinking cold water, luke-warm water, eating a handful of snow...
It has no magic properties over cold water. Any claim that hot water melts fat, improves circulation, cures the common cold, or makes lead into gold is pure hokum, plain and simple. Water has the same benefits to the body regarless of temperature.
FACT: eating ice cream will make you feel warmer in the winter than drinking a cup of hot almost anything. Because it has a lot of calories. Calories = heat. Your body burns them to maintain temperature. More fuel for the fire so to speak.
