Q: What are the laws in China regarding custom made vehicles?
I want to buy an old school bus, strip it down and deck it out as a camper to take my familia on the road, but the wife says I wouldn't be able to get insurance. Do China's road laws differ so much to those in the west? Surely there is the same kind of setup whereby you're simply required to pass an MOT, and as long as it's road worthy and not shaped like a huge cock and balls, you can get insurance, right?

But most Chinese use famous foreign brands to represent the size of their ding-dong-bell.

haha, exactly, there are renditions of 'uge Cock n' Balls on some streets.... may not be China, but I can assure you we sure had vehicles shaped like that in the States...

Far as I know vehicle modifications aren't allowed here in the same way as they are in the West. I did similar years back in the UK with an old ambulance and the only additional check I needed was on the gas cooker installation. I even had an LPG system fitted to work side-by-side with the petrol tank. Simple switch inside changed from one fuel to the other.
Would love one to do the same here but seems not legal.
Considering the chabuduo skills of most "shifu", i think it is highly unlikely that any mods would be allowed. The potential death toll would be horrendous if Chinese were allowed to do this. A hongbao to the inspection officer would allow any madness to be approved.

they use motorcycles to deliver tanks of gas for home cooking so am guessing safety is never an issue

What's the vehicle size? Far as I know we have a weight limitation on Chinese licenses. My UK one allows up to 7.5T but newer UK licenses only 3.5T. To be honest haven't checked my Chinese one.
