Q: What is the best city for study Mandarin in China with relatively low life costs ?

I want to study Mandarin the next semester but I am now confused where to study at , because there are plenty of options. Frankly speaking I only can pay 6000 RMB for one semester ,therefore only small cities universities offer programs with such fees. Do you have any idea where I can find my utopia ?

Life is cheap everywhere in China.  I suppose, you could buy someone for less than 6k and force them to teach you Mandarin.  But at 6k they wouldn't be very useful at anything other than menial labor.

If you are talking about cost-of-living, very standard Mandarin, living on a budget, if you can endure the climate, then Harbin might be the answer.  Mandarin is the "lingua franca" of Harbin and its "Mandarin" is quite favorably to that of Beijing, sometimes more so. Actually there is no real "Harbin talk" as they say around it, because Harbin was created artificially. Things in Harbin are cheaper than other places as it is considered believe it or not to be an economically distressed area.

Beijing is outrageously expensive, except for the buses and subways, and Shanghai is wonderful but Shanghai Mandarin is so influence by the local Wu dialect that even people from Beijing wince at it sometimes.

Guangzhou is a great city but the Mandarin there is not standard at all, given the almost usage of Cantonese by the locals.  The migrants there speak Mandarin but they tend to be the day-workers and peasants from the countryside and the qualiy of their Mandarin is hardly worth mentioning, sad to say.

Just my thoughts.

A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
