Dear All,
In the interest of making things more transparent, I wanted to give you all a quick rundown of what changes we've got in store, and open up a discussion on what you'd like to see changed/implemented in the near future.
Here's a taste of the changes we plan to make (list is not exhaustive):
- Each answer's votes are tallied, and the answer with the highest point valuation gets promoted at the top of the page, right beneath the question. Answers with a total of negative three or less become compressed and need to be clicked on to read their disliked/nefarious/useless/moronic/fill-in-your-adjective content.
- Tagging conversations and/or following users' participation (no fixed decision yet)
- Update box above the answer of the day: will display the new points you got through votes, new answers to questions, new comments, etc... Will work a little like facebook updates, where clicking on the new info will make that box disappear (this will in turn make the daily mail obsolete).
- More posting options - better, flashier emotions, options to bold, underline, hyperlink, etc...
- Possible feature box above all the questions on the homepage (still meditating on this one - feedback would be appreciated)
- Block option
We're open to suggestions, comments, disagreements - what does or doesn't work, needs changing or simply any new content you'd like to see introduced.
Business Cat
Warning: Claws not retracted. This is a call for civil and constructive feedback. Mindless flames will be cat food.
The ability to up and down vote questions themselves or some way to separate the real questions from the attempts to get 3 points or just start a flame war.
Like and dislike buttons on comments, not just answers.
Comments on comments.
HugAPanda:
Yeah, I was going to suggest this. I'd like to be able to give thumbs up to some of the comments.
Comments on comments will be good as that will lead to some individual discussions that can be more easily followed. Information feed back to the original poster if mods have removed their post with reasons for removal.
can we make the words more bigger? that would convenient for peoeple who keep peep at computer's screen for hours.
I'd like an actual forum section where people can discuss news or mingle. I can only answer the same questions posted by n00bs so many times.
I like what you have on the list so far. I'd like to see an advanced search feature broken into categories so people can find answers easily - like search results in Shanghai / food and drink, etc. You get the idea. As more Q&As get posted, it might be nice to organize them.
Or maybe a special section like "Dear Wenna" for singles love advice.
A while back, someone suggested an off-topic section, for questions that aren't strictly related to China. I'd appreciate that.
I like the general format of the site, and the posters are generally quite good, even the ones I occasionally get frustrated with, and I think it'd work quite well if the scope was broadened a tad.
Can the questions that are posted be returned to the originator if they don't make sense or if they are not really a question? I just don't get some of them.
Stick to China related because if you extend the comments and they become a discussion thread then there will be a natural spill into other areas within the thread.
Some good changes coming up in the non-exhaustive list.
Feature box? It will contain a feature about...............????
A REAL expat open forum. It's ok to let the locals sneak in....makes it fun sometimes!
How about a Litter Box section, where we can talk about poop and other dirty stuff.
Oct. 11th - New voting system!
Oct 11,2011 Feedback
From now on the answer with the highest tally of votes gets promoted automatically to the top of the thread, right beneath the original question. Answers with a total of -3 or less will be compressed into a line. Get voting!
Is it possible to make it so that the answer with the most POSITIVE/THUMBS UP votes make it to the top of the thread instead of promoting the thumbs down votes to the top?
It's ridiculous to see answers from the flamers with 4 or 5 thumbs down votes, and all the negativity they've spewed promoted to the top.

This is currently a bug, which will by fixed by the end of today.
I think we need an "OPINIONS" section where we can discuss possible answers to questions that don't have 100% verifiable answers, like "Why do some Chinese girls walk like a duck?" or "What will China look like in 2050?" or even "Why r most foreigners(male) in China only want to get laid and act completely as jerk?"
While these are questions, some of these things cannot be given actual answers, only opinion. There is a huge difference between Q: "Where can I buy shoes in Shanghai?" A: Nanjing Xi Lu and Q:"What do you think about....."
Don't get me wrong, I like the discussion aspect of opinion questions, but for some visitors, I think they will be coming to find Q&A on specific topics like where to find things or what is a good medicine, etc.
Just an idea.
MrTibbles:
Oh, another idea... Sometimes people may provide a good answer but slip and say something inappropriate. I've done it before on a bad China day and I know others have as well. Instead of deleting posts, could they be suspended and the poster given an opportunity to edit or modify their message? Such as "This post has been flagged for inappropriate content and is awaiting moderation. Please modify your content." I think that would be a fair system. I think at some point most people ARE going to vent some frustrations and this cannot be avoided. This would give everyone an opportunity to make their point but to do so in following the terms and conditions of the website. If someone is frustrated and angry and makes a "venting" post, simply getting deleted seems to make people even more frustrated. Unless someone is a massive repeat offender of course or the post has ZERO merit. Again, just an idea!
How about some freedom to post. I try to post humour and there seems to be a difference from what I write sometimes and what I read or my post disappears ( i'm not that crewd),, Is there an online translator connected to this site?
The only time I'm not trying to be fun is if I give an honest answer or the other poster is an insulting bigot. The bigots have a free hand to post anything they like. Why can't I just have fun? I admit I use metaphors, euphemisms, innuendos and I'm sacastic and cynical. But thats just me.

non taken, I'm not hurtful either, if i can make you chuckle, that is my motive
FIX THE POINTS COUNTER,,it goes backwards, I just answered 2 questions, got no points but lost one. No I'm not maxed out for the day. I see this all the time.
how about a FYI section
if somthing like a new con is about you could post it to warn others
or a event that may be of intrest
When the system makes the exact same post twice, how about not cause the user to lose points for trying and straighten up the site (i.e. deleting the second post).
Link back from the points section so that when it shows, content voted you can see which content it refered to. List the posters who give you the thumbs up or down when you hover over the thumbs. We are all adults here and can cop some criticism and it will be great to know who agrees or disagrees so we can continue some interesting debates and banter.
When you delete one of your own comments (not answers), make it so you don't lose 2 points that you didn't get for posting the comment in the first place.
Since there is an answer of the day I think it would be right to have a question of the week or a question of the month. That way people will be motivated to come up with good questions as they have been trying to give good answers. Other than having a question of the week or month I would like to see points being given to people who have good questions. Whenever somebody marks a thumbs up for a question the person doesn't get any points.
