Q: What did you put on your list of items to pack before you left for China?

Would anyone be willing to share what they listed?

Cooter say more about losing weight!

cooter:

Just eat and drink like a local....it will happen.  Either by calorie deficiency, or frequent bowel turnover, or both!

Attention seeker, are you a guy or a girl? The rule, from speaking among the expats I know across Asia, seems to be that the girls put on weight when they first arrive, and the guys lose loads. This is horrendously, hideously unfair, but seems to be pretty consistently the case.

Body products (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodarant, lotion, shaving cream, razors, chapstick, other face products)

All sorts of meds, bandaids, etc. (like my own First aid kit)

Off brand of Nyquil

Gum

Hand sanitzer (although I rarely use it now, they're in little bottles, so I can give them as gifts)

A box of Life cereal (haven't eaten it though)

2 boxes of mac and cheese (only ate one)

Other snacks

3 little bottles of nail polish

Jewelry

A small stuffed animal lion

Cell phone for emergencies (and charger)

Too much clothing

Several pairs of shoes

Accessories

A towel

Some books

My ipod (and my old ipod)

My laptop, camera, microphone

Hair straightener (rarely use it)

I'm not sure if my suitcase will be lighter or more empty going home (as I have bought gifts in Japan) but it will certainly be lighter coming to China a second time. I guess I was just worried that I would need something because I would be gone for a whole year. When I go on a normal trip I practically under pack and usually end up forgetting something.

Thank you for some excellent suggestions, respondents! You have helped me make my own list, and I am grateful for that.

Now, another question: some of you have mentioned bringing things over from your home countries to China as intended gifts. I have read how important gift giving is in China and intend to practice it, but is it so important that people new to China are expected to be loaded with future gifts even as soon as they exit their flights?

TedDBayer:

I read that also, brought gifts both times, never got one back. I thought that was the custom.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
