i am not getting racist just to find out what's the market demand. is it business or do Chinese really want to have some thing concrete, long lasting ?
You know, you don't need to tell us you aren't being racist just because you asked a question like the one you posted. Seriously, I doubt that you need to justify your question at all. Your question was fine as is. You are not guilty til proven innocent here...as far as I'm concerned anyway.
So, my answer would be that, yup, they want to see your face and check out your passport. They may well make an immediate determination upon the initial viewing. There's not a damn thing any of us can do about that. I'm Canadian so of course I pass that test. Secondly, I am no spring's chicken so I suppose my age and experience usually moves me to the next step. Not necessarily in that order mind you.I have lots of relevant experience so that couple with my education makes me a candidate that most decision makers will want to get to know better.
To me, that makes sense.
Oh, and this may be one of the few situations where guanxi won't be of great benefit. However I could be wrong here....guanxi is a strange and powerful thing. As a matter of fact, i believe have been used by Chinese friends to get guanxi on a couple of occasions. That's ok too. What goes around here usually has a way of coming around.
Unfortunately....
1) White face is better
2) originate from a Western country
3) do your job and shut up
4) listen to what the boss says and shut up
I have always hated to work for a Chinese boss whatever they are from Hong Kong, mainland China or Taiwan....they are usually so arrogant that I wonder how a free Western mind could tolerate it.
By experience, I used to work for a company, and one day one of the top manager came to me to tell me that I needed to sell moon cakes to foreigners. I simply took his project and put it aside on my desk, never looking at it anymore.
LAR:
"they are usually................tolerate it." You need to include South Korea as well!!
All of what you mentioned in your question matters........from education to country status....everything matters because all are important but it differs from one employer to another which is more important and that my friend you can't guess cause you can't read people's mind and think which thing is more important to the person who is giving you the job
What do they valve more? I don't know...spelling?
Sorry man, cheap shot.
I only know about teaching jobs in terms of what employers want and it can be summed up in one sentence: being a white westerner who can string a sentence together in English. Fortunately for me those are the only two qualifications I possess.
