What stigmas, if any, are attached to people who wear those white face masks while outdoors and especially in very polluted regions? For instance, are such people considered perhaps wise, cowardly, wealthy, or paranoid? Does the government encourage people to wear the masks? Or, might pop culture promote it? What are common reasons for wearing face masks, and what are common reasons for not wearing them? I'm curious about it.

I asked about this and was told, maybe they have a cold.
In winter in Nth China I have to wear one. It is just so freakin cold that I feel like my nose will drop off. They are very annoying to wear though.
In summer there are probably valid reasons for wearing them but because they annoy me and also because I don't want to look like a paranoid dick I won't wear one.

Hell yeah woody..I don't blame you for wearing a mask as I'm also in the north and it does get cold as hell here! Living in the coldest Chinese province is not easy! If people want to wear the masks for health reasons, etc. I say more power to them! God only knows there are many cities here with really bad air pollution. I read that breathing the air in Beijing is like inhaling 21 cigarettes! Ouch! :(
