Anonymous: all the way from winning the Welfare Lottery to living off savings and/or retirement. Do not place limits on yourself, open a business, provide a service, whatever fancies you.
I agree with HappyExPat, but you have to remember 2 things. You still have to have a legal visa, so keep that in mind. Also, if you're going to start a business, make sure you know all the legalities. I've heard of bad things when foreigners start a business in China, or of them getting screwed out of the business eventually.

Stories like that normally involve joint ventures with Chinese partners. I have heard many, many horror stories about that. I am sure there are a lot of really great joint ventures going on, but I have yet to hear about one.
