Q: What skills (or knowledge) do you really wish someone had taught you as a kid?

Stealing this question from a talkback show on the radio right now...

"What's the adult thing no-one taught you to do?"

Tax has been said - but I did actually learn to do that in my maths class.

Raising a family, buying a house, etc have also been mentioned.

I'd probably suggest - writing good resumes and cover letters. Especially for Selection Criteria for government positions.

Kids don't need to write resumes or cover letters.

I have a kid.

I am trying to teach her she has no fear of a smack on the head from me. No way will I lift my hands to her. No way.

I wish my parents had taught me that. I wish some libtard social worker had turned up and told my old man to stop smaking me on my head because I was making too much noise.

In short, I wish some do gooder had stepped in and made an attempt to educate my parents.

Parent education is much more important than child education. Tackle the cause, not the affect.

Shining_brow:

Perhaps I should have said 'adolescent' rather than 'kid'...

Anyway, it's a question about skills adults need to have, but aren't taught by anyone when younger...

Teenagers. Adults. Too late. So many teachers here seem to be ex military, far right wing, nuke them all arseholes. Others are the "good time" guys. Actual educators seem to be thin on the ground... On other forums. But not here. Lots of educators here. But sorry, no way would I pay you guys to teach my daughter.

Ted Cruz at the weekend, reacted to protesters. To paraphrase... "In my house you would be spanked for being rude". Wow. A Christian who wants to inflict physical pain on his own kids.... Wow. My job is to protect my daughter from physical pain. Not inflict it. What sort of twisted individual feels they need to inflict pain to assert their authority?

-Sewing. It would be nice to be able to make my own dresses or even know how to hem trousers instead of paying the tailor $10+ to do it.

- Righty tighty lefty loosey: I did not figure this out until I was well into adulthood. If someone had shown me how this works as a kid, it would have saved me untold amounts of frustration.

-basic auto repair skills

In hindsight, there are many things i wish were taught in young age!

Guess the wisdom imparted by grandma's and pa's as kids is commonly shrugged off as 'old fashioned' 'this is new generation/thinking' in youth-age. But in adulthood, those very things turn out right (often with some experiences). So, old is gold and wise!

Samsara:

God, this is pitiful.

Expats give real answers from their own experience. You speak entirely in cliches and stock phrases (just like here).

EVERYONE here knows you are Chinese. Please develop just a little self awareness, realise how embarrassing your situation is, and then maybe... leave?

@Samsara, Everyone knows you are a 'I hate China/Chinese' raving lunatic. Stop being so dramatic to reinforce it again and again. It must suck to be you.

In no particular order:

Mountaineering, cliff climbing, and sailing.

Stiggs:

Sailing ! That's a good one, I really wish I could sail.

Martial arts. I got into it later in life and will never be much good, wish I had started when I was a kid.

Shining_brow:

I agree! I think EVERY kid should be taught martial arts, both from the fitness perspective, and of course, self-defense.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
