Considering that a majority of the people live in an apartment style building. What is the best pet to own in China in your opinion? I'm not particularly sure that a dog would be the best pet to have in China. Back home all my neighbors have dogs but those dogs are able to run around. I would think that dogs would not be a real good pet to have. For me it would probably be a turtle or a bird.
To me it would be fish. I do spend a lot of time each day watching them interact, quite interesting. They make no noise, no smells, one feed per day and you are done.
I have sort of trained them, I tap the glass three times, then feed them. They all come to the top to wait for food when I do tap the glass now.

I had pet fish back home too. They always seem to know that their masters coming and I agree a fish is an excellent pet to have in china. Not a lot of noise to disturb the neighbors and yet a fascinating creature to marvel at.
Something fast. If the neighbors can't catch it, then they can't eat it.
Some small dogs, like the pekingese who is happy lounging on the couch, are good for apartment dwellers. Cats are great apartment pets. Bunnies, hamsters, gerbils... all good choices for an apartment.
As far as birds go, small birds like parakeets, parrotlets, cockatiels and finches, are great. Just make sure their cage is big enough for them to move around and get some exercise. But bigger birds like amazons, eclectus, cockatoos, greys, macaws... not such a good idea in an apartment. They can be VERY loud, especially when they start talking. And they can scream so loud the neighbors call the police thinking you're murdering someone. They need HUGE cages (My parrot's cage is 4ft x 3 ft x 5 feet tall) they need out of cage time to exercise, are very social, and are a lot of work. They make huge messes. They need lots of fruits and veggies and other healthy foods (seeds and pellets aren't the ideal diets for them), and their vet bills can get very high very quick if yours gets sick.
Funny story... my parrot (an eclectus) learned to say help. One summer day, the windows were open and I put Murphy on his perch in the shower. He gets very loud in the shower, and practices his words. He started saying help. Then he started yelling help. Then he started screaming help. Within about 4 minutes, the police were knocking at my door. While one was looking around my house, I took the other one to the bathroom to show them the source of the little torturee, but since Murph wouldn't talk in front of them, it took a little convincing. Finally, we walked out of the bathroom, closed the door, and Murph started with the HELP again. The officers laughed and left.

yeah that's a funny story about your parrot. I thought most parrots say Hello!
I think having a small dog can be a great pet, if you have some time every day to play with it and take it outside. Dogs are really becoming popular in China, and they're always happy to see you. It depends on how long you will be here and the type of lifestyle you have. If you are very busy all the time and are usually not home, maybe you should just get a fish. Pets deserve proper care and attention.
Dog is the best pet because when you get tired of it you can sell it to a restarurant
DaBen:
ummm gerry, that holds true for all pets. You can still vote for dogs if you want, but any critter is up for the dinner plate if you go to the right place (some way easier to sell than a dog as well).
A Penthouse one.
giadrosich:
Lol. And I was going to be content with saying "a gecko!"
The dog is very suitable for people, sent to the school will get be better
