Q: What's the biggest western utensil fail you've witnessed?
Condescending compliments from locals about chopstick use are prevalent for any ex-pat. So, what's the most entertaining episode you've encountered with Chinese trying to use western utensils?
Recently, I was in the "pizza parlor" and saw a good one. A man, dressed in a suit, was using the triangular pizza server to eat his pie. He would pick up a slice with the server, take a bite, then watch the slice fall to his plate. After countless attempts, he got wise-he used the fork to keep the slice on the server. No one else in the place was eating in this manner. Why he couldn't use a knife and fork, or better yet, his hands(it is pizza) is beyond me. Well, it kept me entertained for a while. Cheers to that guy!
A first date with a girl a few years ago. She was using a knife with way to much pressure, it slipped out of her grip and actually broke the side off the plate. I did feel bad for her, she was absolutely mortified. A very sweet girl and she was trying so hard to impress the laowai, just a bit too nervous for her own good. Since then I normally take them to places with chopsticks on the first date, often Japanese restaurants.

You mean, other than needing to hold the knife (and often the fork) like they need to kill their food first... and often having to change hands regularly... kill with right hand knife, then swap hands, so the food can get to the mouth...

I always enjoy when a Chinese stabs a huge hunk of meat and never lets the meat off their fork. They just eat their way around it from outside to inside.
I am not sure if it's classed as a western utensil, but I once saw a Chinese guy that struggled with the complexity of using a bottle opener, and ended up using his teeth instead.
