Q: What's the coolest souvenir you bought in China?

For my parent's birthday I bought them one of those Chinese pictures woven from silk in a circular frame that rotates on a wooden pedestal. No idea what to call those things, but they're really beautiful.

Being an art lover, I find myself buying a lot of original traditional ink paintings. Huge things, really, but wonderful in the extreme. They come on paper, scrolls, and fans! Yikes! My house will be full of them soon.

I bought my sister an absolutely gorgeous, incredibly ornately engraved, carved wooden dildo. She loved it!

I'm sorry minabottle, it's a compulsion. I did buy many things a few years back, trying to make up for all the birthdays i'd missed for various brothers and sisters and the like. Did all my shopping in Yangshuo: beautiful wooden carvings, Chinese flutes and wall hangings, etc. My advice is to get something with a story behind it; something that relates to your stay, that'll give you more opportunities to talk about your visit, and you can hold a gun to them, just to make sure they're listening. That's what I like to do anyway:)

That was not a dildo you got her. It was a shoehorn....

Yeh, watch what you say, Phil, I think I see her looking over your shoulder. She sees you describing her as a souvenir and you'll be for it.

If I go to one of the first tier cities (hopefully reasonably soon) as a tourist I want to get some of those copy oil paintings, you know the copies of old masters. The ones I've seen are incredibly good.

P.S. They aren't considered forgeries (so they are legal) so long as the 'signature' isn't copied and they're not sold as 'genuine'.

LOL, the amount of thumbs downs on this thread, for no apparent reason, is strange.

It appears someone doesn't have the sphericals to speak their mind, or is drunk or both.

Rectified. This round's on me.

It happens.  Some guys here just love giving thumbs down to an entire post for no apparent reason.

Anyway, here is your second thumbs up to balance it off!

An oil painting of the Hong Kong skyline on the Peak.   I plan on having it framed...not the greatest artistic effort but very good and sentimental because of the time I bought it.

I got a huge painting specifically designed by me and a local painter about my life in Beijing, and she painted it all on canvas.  It's huge but can roll up nicely.  Cost me a bit of money but it was completely worth it.

I was for awhile collecting those small scent bottles made from polished bone and etched with scenes of erotica. I thought they were pretty cool. I think I have about 8 of them.

Being a collector of Chinese antiquities I have developed a network of "scrounges" and local "pickers" in several cities over the years.  My tour de force has so far been a 14-piece set of bronze Waring States period armor.

A:I had a similar experience in HK. If I recall correctly, before or at the Z visa application, I had to submit ME from the ordinary HK clinic, where I explained why I need ME and I asked them to examine only necessary things (I don't remember the cost ...), and then ... I got Z stamp and when back in China, I had to complete another RP ME, which was on the employer, i.e. included in the Contract ...We've never discussed refund of payment for HK ME with my employer. Year 2013 ...I'd say, that is a regular thingy embassies around the world require, before issuing visas for LT stay in the country. "Vladimir Vladimiro-Witch ras-Putin" (LOL@your pronunciation ..) demands the same thingy before granting LT stay in Ruski.  ... Haa, 2013 was the Snowden's year. I was in Kowloon at the time of his landing .. with all these files ... I'm-Still-in-LMAO-State ... Cost for the ME in HK was around HK$ 2000/200 EUR, and ME was kind of swift, quicker and way shorter than on the mainland ... -- icnif77
