If they're university students, they live in dorms. Otherwise, they live with their families.
I'm really curious as to what it's like dating before getting married. It must be incredibly frustrating. Do they all go to hotels to do what they need to do?

Having briefly attended Peking University, I know that many couples would walk around the lake at night and just do what they had to do in the bushes. It wasn't uncommon to hear suspicious rustling noises if you ventured out there late.
Otherwise, many of them just go to hotels. It's certainly not romantic, but it's better than nothing.
The virginity myth also really needs to be dispelled. The average Chinese girl does not wait until marriage before having sex.
Before I reply, it would be interesting to know how long have you been in China, and how naive are you?.
For your information, in just about every city within China, there are many hotels who do rent rooms by the hour, if I recall right the minimum is 8 hours. They are normally two to three star hotels, not fancy at all. And if you manage to be near one, you will see many young couples (without luggage) getting a room and after a few hours leave the place with a satisfied look in their faces, and a smile on their lips.
So, it ain't that frustrating in many ways.
Yeah, there are famous spots in the local parks for this kind of thing.
I have a friend who has woken up next to a young women only to be greeted by her parents who then start discussing how perfect she is for marriage. so I think that’s why so many young Chinese go for the bushes
