Q: What's your favorite hostel/hotel/motel in China?
WARNING!!!!!! DO NOT stay at the SOHO Hostel in Shanghai! (I speak from personal experience.) They are the worst!! :(
Rude staff (other guests also complained about this.),unprofessional,hot,humid guest rooms,constant loud atmosphere,guests have to pay for EVERYTHING..whereas at other Chinese hostels one doesn't have to..(washing and drying clothes,etc.)

Any hotel that doesn't wake me up with "masa-gee" phone calls or door knocks at 1am.

I always get those no matter where I go, but I never answer the phone. I also get cards outside my door every evening... ugh. I called them a few times to troll them for bothering me so much, but that's it.
When I am in Guangzhou, For the last two years i have stayed at the Nan Feng Hotel, in Keyun Bei Lu, Tangxia, Tianhe. Very nice hotel, all marble floors and rugs, free buffet breakfast from 7 to 10 am, very good looking rooms, very nice staff and a few do speak relatively good English. Walking in from the street, rooms are 588 Rmb per night minimum, I make bookings thru Agoda and get 311 Rmb per night off season, maybe 380 on season.
By now they do know me there, have stayed over 10 times, and they do know what I like and dislike. I was very surprised last February when I was there during my birthday (they found out by looking at my passport), and at 6 pm there was a knock on my door, and when opened I was serenaded with a Happy Birthday song and a cake by the hotel management and a few staff. We had a very enjoyable get together for about two hours, and I was very grateful for that small consideration.
But a warning, it is off the center of the city, and not too much to do around except a golf range belonging to hotel. But a taxi ride to city center, train stations, etc is under 45 yuan, and to airport varies from 85 to 150 depending on route and traffic conditions.
At least, to me, it is my home away from home.
I have traveled to several cities for work. For my money, the JinJiang Zhixing chain of hotels is the best bet. They are relatively cheap, clean and friendly. I have not had a bad experience with this chain.
I lived in one hotel for 12 months over an 18 month period....I was like family.
The shock came after I rented an apartment.
I miss the Dragon Spring.

I loved living in a hotel. I did that for several months. It got expensive, but it was really convenient. However, I eventually stepped outside my comfort zone, and.... boom.
I like youth Hostel................cheap and clean enough

I like the one in yangshuo........the place is clean...people are polite and the service is in the highest quality

well in yangshuo they rely heavily on reputation, small western community there, and hostels everywhere and its such a small town, so its easy to look for another place if you are not happy, you can find plenty of decent places in yangshuo and some very good hotels
I agree about JinJiang Inns. There are a lot of them around and I have stayed at a number of them. Good value rooms and always clean. We have a card and get good discounts.
i like the ramada in shanghai or the shangra la hotel in xi an both are very nice
I always use hostels as I am on a budget.
I recently stayed at Candy Inn in Kunming. Great experience, clean rooms, free laundry service and they allow pets.
Another of my favourites is Guilin backstreet youth hostel. English speaking staff, great food, cheap drinks and very central.
Also I like staying at Sanlitun youth hostel in Beijing.Cheap, clean, fairly close to the centre and good food.
The 9 dragons inn, Beijing.
Quirky with a cracking English breakfast.
The staff are nice and the people that go there are generally a good crowd.

Seven Days Inn in every city and province. I make sure to visit them every time. Budget hotels, generally reliable internet (except near the airport in Beijing), and very flexible everything.
I would never go to a hostel...

At the seven days in Handan and Shijiazhuang they aren't allowed to have foreigners stay there.

Nantong - No foreigners at the 7 Days I tried. Shenzhen, yes. That's why they aren't my first choice for budget hotels. They are hit and miss.

Sorry, I should've mentioned: I always bypass this with a Chinese ID card.
When in Changsha, I always stay at the HuaTian. In Shenzhen, I love being at the top of the Hyatt when I'm splurging. My favorite budget chain hotel is Greentree Inn, but my all-time favorite hotel is the Muse City Hotel in Fuzhou, with a big round bed and a bathtub big enough for 4 or 5. Highly recommended.
when my work-place pays: Golden Ocean Hotel in Tinajin. When i travel, i have been in a some great low-budget hotels in Chongqing and Dailin
