alcohol and cigarettes....said no to Chinese alcohol many times during group dinner but always end up drinking..never smoked before coming to china..now i smoke now and then after alcohol....when i do that, I really feel guilty like i did a crime..

It is not that i don't drink alcohol, in fact I enjoy it if is nice one and drink in different ways than 'Chinese way' (For me it is like "Highway to hell')

Not being able to leave.

Seriously, my greatest fear is that my children get hurt or worse because some asshole wanted to save a few RMB on his products.

  Dinosaurs. I'm afraid of dinosaurs.

Ok, really, my fear is of how attitudes towards foreigners will change as the novelty of their existence wears off. I plan to be here for a good few years. Maybe in ten years we'll head west for secondary schooling, but in the meantime I just want my son to be treated fairly. So far I don't see any major problem, but there are always purist types or arrogant bigots, quick to judge vast numbers of people for the behaviour of a few, they exist in every culture. I've even come across one or two amongst you fine folk. I'm just afraid of my boy getting judged on the actions of low types who come here without respect for the country and do little more than cause trouble and create a stink.

Me or any of my family getting a sudden illness that is so severe it precludes a flight back to the UK.

I really must get insurance for that but my wife insists it isn't possible.

My biggest fear would be for some sort of open, formalized conflict to materialize between China and the US.  Not sure what would happen to me as a US citizen living in China.  I'd get out if possible.....but then what if it isn't possible?

Hugh.G.Rection:

Well in both UK and USA in WWII people were interned for being from the 'wrong' nation, however no such things happened in more recent conflicts. I suspect in China depending on your age you would simply be deported, (YAY, free flight!!!).

Personally I would want to stay in China, but I would obviously have to take my wife and daughter into consideration before a decision was made. Once I have committed to something I don't change course very easily.

stan118:

no matter how how careful you are you are pick pockets can find a way, just wait until you are distracted, if one of them is around he will try and take advantage of the opportunity, if too troublesome or risky they will move on to someone else

I lost my phone on a bus just before I left, partly my fault, didn't believe a little shit would try me. My girl friend won't call my phone when the passengers got off.

Getting hit by a kamikaze scooter driver, they drive like idiots because they are and you can't hear them. I got T-boned once on my scooter, almost a few other times which I thought were going to end up in a fight. They're at fault and giving me lip? You have to look both ways more than once.

Or some big poisonous snake, I'm afraid of garter snakes at home. I just have that kind of luck, if someone is going to run into one, it will be me. I just hope I'm with someone that I can trip and make my get away.

As a proud American from Austin, Texas, I will tell you what I am NOT afraid of by living in China:

Getting shot in the head at close range in the parking lot of a supermarket in broad daylight by some psycho who wants to steal my shitty 2004 Honda Civic AND my groceries... Losing my shotgun barrel house to the bank because I can’t pay my hospital bills since I can’t afford medical insurance due to a so-called pre-condition or a typo on my insurance application form, and then ending up homeless, panhandling at a stoplight at some intersection in a city like Detroit or Tucson or San Bernardino... Lessee... More?

Getting diabetes, coronary disease, obese, rotting teeth and gums, etc. because I eat way too many hamburgers, fritos and chips, and drink too many milk shakes and diet Cokes... Ok, myyyy bad... Uhhmm... What else am I NOT afraid of by living in China?

Oh, yeah. No politically-correct, small-minded, puritanical, finger-wagging, right-wing, (repugnican or demon-crat), christian, holier-than-thou, anal-retentive school marms (male or female) scolding me every time I want to do something criminally insane like have a smoke or use the word babe or cunt in mixed company... and finally...

Well, there’s a litany of other non-fears that I harbor, but I’ll end with this one: In China, I am NOT afraid of showing my love, affection, support, encouragement and admiration of my Chinese students or friends - male or female - by verbal praise and actual physical touch (OH, MY LADY GAGA!!!) in the way of a brotherly / fatherly hug, a reaffirming hand on the shoulder or even a peck on the cheek.(YIKES!!!) At home, I’d be accused and branded a sex offender, booked, ankle-shackled and jailed for 20 years somewhere in Mississippi...

God bless all y’all!

And count your blessings you’re in China... and not in capital-m-iss-iss-i-ippi...    Smile

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
