Q: Where to buy decent cheese in Shanghai?
There are many places to buy cheese in Shanghai especially some of the Western style supermarkets and speciality shops. Try the new supermarket near Shanghai Stadium.
Any of the City Shops carry a decent selection of cheese. By decent, I mean it's better than some places and steps above the milk-flavored wax that passes as cheese in the more local shops (I'm talking about you Milkana!). You can usually find an "American Pizza Cheese" that is a really basic mozarella for like 9rmb/100g. They also usually have a few wheels of Dutch Gouda (about 14rmb/100g) and Parmesan (forget the price, but it's not too bad) and other cheeses (all at the deli counter). There is also prepackaged stuff, but it's a bit pricier (oddly, except for Bleu Cheese).
Most Carrefours also have a limited selection of cheese (except for Gubei - much better from what I've seen - I don't know about in Pudong). The prices are close to CS. Some higher, some lower, but no deli counter for sliced cheese to order as far as I know).
City Super in Pudong has a great selection (same City Super from HK) but be prepared to pay for it. It's not cheap.
Feidan also carries a limited selection. Handy if you live close by one, but nothing I haven't found at Carrefour/City Shop.
Some of the nicer Lian Huas will carry oddly enough Irish cheese (a brand called Dubliner, the Blarney Castle is rather nice) and often a few brands of Australian and NZ slices and small blocks (usually just cheddar though). I've even seen US Land-O-Lakes Montery Jack there on occasion. Mind you, this is at the larger, better stocked Lian Huas (usually in better off neighborhoods) - you won't find them at the little craphole markets or the "Lian Hua Xpress".
I'm sure there are other places, like Metro and Tesco that carry cheese, but I don't go to those places namely because they aren't conveniently located to me and I hate planning half a day to try and buy cheese that may or may not be somewhere.
If all else fails, type cheese into Taobao.
Cheese never ceases to amaze me. Cheese is such an art form to me. It is amazing how many types there are and how each area of the world create their own unique cheeses. For me just starting in the cheese world I love to buy cheese online. It seems to be a bit cheaper and even more than that I am able to find so many different types that I have never found in my local grocery store.
