If you don't trust your room mates, don't have valuables in your place. If you don't trust your room mates then get new room mates.

I do not think the concept of having a box at the bank exists or maybe it odes but is not very common

GuilinRaf:

I do not know about    banks, but my experience with safe deposit boxes in the hotel (not the ones in the room) is that you have no privacy. They will look into what  you have in the box and write down the contents and save the information.  When I asked for a copy of what they wrote they balked but eventually gave it to me (so I could compare if anything went missing).

just a general FYI....

Why not just take the honestly-direct approach to your situation? Tell the people in your flat you want enough info about them to hunt them down and violate their living and then dead corpses should even one single gold flake go missing. I think once they surrender to your demands and realize how fanatical you are about this, you will have a trusted roomie. Good luck!

Hide it internally. That will keep it safe for a short while...

Invest in a Safety Lock Box with a combination that you would only know. You can pick one up at Walmart they sell those there. Just keep your valuables in there and it should be safe and  you shouldn't be getting worried like this after that. (Drunk!

Gold bars???  In your shoes, of course!  Just like that nitwit crossing the border from HK into the mainland recently.  Ha ha!  What a jerk.

Your other gold?  Give it to me.  I'll safeguard it for you.  Promise.  I'll make sure your roomies in the "room" you share - since you're so wealthy with gold bars and all - don't take it.

Okay, Siting?  Deal?

Well, my bank in the US offered long-term rental on Safety-Deposit boxes for a very reasonable fee. Dunno if available/common here or not...

Traveler:

I can just imagine the "security" on safety deposit boxes in China. "Why is my safety security box empty?" "Where have all my valuables gone?" Blank stare from bank staff.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
