Hi everyone,
I want to buy some Chinese alcohol as a housewarming gift for my friend’s father and would like your advice. I was thought about buying a foreign drink such as Scottish Whisky but he might not like it although he would be happy to show it off to other people but I’d rather buy something he will enjoy, so I am thinking a Chinese brand might be best.
What suggestions do you have as I am not sure what Chinese people really like drinking when it comes to alcohol, or which brands are the best, the price doesn’t really matter as it is a one time gift. I saw tons of Chinese drinks in the supermarket but had no idea what they were although some looked really cool bottled in red vases with gold rims all I could understand was that it was 52% volume in alcohol and a price of 899RMB.
Any advice would be great thank you.
Bottle of Scotch would be your best bet. A standard blend should cost about 250-300 RMB a bottle in a decent supermarket. If it's 120 RMB it's probably a copy.
Good thing about buying western drinks is it will still be there for you on your next visit

my advice is never give as a gift something people can/would easily get for themselves; just doesn't seem very special to me. a gift is supposed to be remarkable for some reason or another, and one of the easiest things to do to make them remarkable is to move away from the ordinary. In other words, what's just another bottle of baiju to this guy?
Here ya go, try this!
Moutai is the supposed "best brand" of Baijiu in China. It is also the most expensive and can reach like 10k RMB. If you got him a lesser expensive one that would probably make him happy.
You could try getting him Vodka and teaching him how to make a simple cocktail. That would probably make him happy. Like a screwdriver or White Russian or something. It would be a new experience and a new alcohol. Just find out if he prefers sweet, bitter, salty (like Bloody Marys) or whatever...
ScotsAlan:
Need a freezer for vodka. So storage of vodka will cost money.
Buy something like Jack Daniels and show them some mixed drinks they can make. Beer Back, Jack and Coke, etc. It might be fun to play bartender at the party. And, they might like some of the mixed drinks. Or, just buy a bunch of beer and play Beer Pong with them.
Any foreign whisky should do.
Even if they don't drink it, they will be able to bring it out and impress their friends and acquire 'face'
everyone wins.
If you want to buy Chinese alcohol so by far the most famous in China is Mao Tai (茅台). It can vary from expensive to incredible expensive but any Maotai will do the trick - it's a good gift.
If you want to go for better price quality ratio so my personal recommendation would be Wu Liang Ye (五粮液). The cheapest good one will be a bit less than 200 CNY for half an liter bottle, the good ones for about 300 CNY and very good ones will go sharp up with the price.
Both these alcohols will be well received by Chinese but buying Mao Tai will give you more face .

Not sure what is Moutai but the famous Chinese drink is in Mandarin pronounced Mao2 Tai2 :)
I'd go with a bottle of Canadian or Australian wine which most everyone likes and is still affordable. White or red? Play it safe and go with a Rose.
If you can use taobao I recommend 179club. It is a decent shop I found that sells REAL alcohol. They had a sale on whiskey a few days ago I got 4 bottles. Don't know if the sale is still on though.
