I'm talking about the 5rmn bottle of water that you know everyone else is buying for 1rmb each. not so much the big scams but just the cities where people not only cheat you on the little stuff but dont budge one the price even after you make it clear that you know the real price things should be.
my experience it's beijing. beijing everyone can be a cheat taxi drivers , vendors, massage girls, people on the street, the little trike taxis. shenzhen gz much different as far as big cities go. guilin is just plain expense not cheating wise just the price of everything is marked up for tourist
If you know what the price should be, and they refuse to budge down to that price, walk away, unless it's something you really want, and won't be able to find on the next corner or whatever. No?
I bought one cucumber for 10rmb...
Don't have a choice...
It also happens everywhere in China... Most likely train/bus stations, tourist attractions...
I think this is more likely to happen in cities with a lot of tourists. Living in a small, unknown city definitely has its benefits.
I live in the small city. I know the right price. If I buy a bottle of water, i just pick up the bottle, give them 1 yuan and walk away. there will be no price discussion.
just stick with this simple formula.... the more laowai in your area, the more you should expect to be scammed
The less you know the language the more likely you will be cheated a little. The more you know some unkind Chinese phrases the happier you will be when you do walk away. I'm kind of with DaBen on the formula too.
