Wuhan, Hubei provice.  This city has almost no redeeming qualities at all.

could not agree more, I don't think I have ever enjoyed myself in Wuhan.

Hubby and I loved Jianghan Road (Walking street and the restaurants there). People were the nicest and Wuhanese are smilier (smiley) than Jiangsu peeps . We most of the time get freebies/ discounts from retaurants/clubs. We only stayed there for four months though. At one of the clubs (near Kempinski) the manager would give us free flowing drinks just cause we are foreigners and he thinks it would be cool if the locals would see us hanging out at his club. We didn't get that kind of treatment elsewhere (Guangzhou nor Shanghai). Oh well, those were the good times angel

If I were you, I would look into a few more details that just move into a "pretty" capital city, or one with "plenty" of nice looking gals.  Those things are somewhat important, but since you seem to work, other factors could be of importance too.  Like for example, rate of pay for the city you propose to live.  Where I live, for college English teachers the pay is 6,000 Rmb per month plus fringues, High School teachers get 4,000, and Grammar School teachers get 2,000 per month.  Of course, you do get also an apartment on campus, free utilities, free heath insurance, so basically salary pays only clothes, food and entertaiment.

If you dislike snow, then consider warmer South portion of China, in Guangzhou rate of pay is better than here, there is around 8 to 12,000 per month, but cost of living is higher.  Shenzhen is about the same as Guangzhou, and they are one hour ride apart.

You have time to decide, do take a few trips to potential sites, and do a bit of scouting, then reach a better decision with more facts on hand.

Good luck tyo you.

Other than where you are?? Tongue

I've heard that Taiyuan is really really bad for pollution...

I also haven't been to Urumqi, and for now, it's really only a place I'd go for a visit... but my ex went there briefly, and she said it wasn't too bad.

Wuhan - gets REALLY hot and humid....

Shenyang is too cold in winter too hot in summer, more expensive than Harbin, and has terrible traffic-Worst city in China in my opinion.

kchur:

I spent a month in Shenyang and I really didn't mind it. Good bbq everywhere, and a lack of whiney braggart sissy boys. Although I have no clue how it stacks up to the rest of the northeast.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
