Back home I'm a Chrome user, so far however it hasn't been a great experience. I've also tried Internet Explorer and even the Chinese one 360 but my girlfriend and I couldn't find a way to show it in English.
Can anyone recommend what they have found to be the best web browser for use in China? Perhaps also some extensions or add on's that were helpful.
Cheers

Opera. The version is important, from my experience the latest usually isn't the best. The older ones (search 'old version opera browser') are better. I found ver 22.0.1 (June 2014) best. www.opera.com
I agree with Mr ambivalentmace, firefox does the job well and in my experience responds faster than chrome. Forget IE unless you have the patience of a zen monk.
FIrefox is pretty much unheard of in China as most prefer the virus collecting 360 scam products (because it's free) which may be why it appears faster than others. Less people connecting to the servers. But as Mr a points out, they have disabled Flash on the browser due to some concerns over security which is a little bothersome. Firefox has that neat add-on that translates pages too.
According to a chinese IT buddy, companies pay 360 to make their spyware/malware invisible to their scans. It is damn near impossible to remove once you have it, especially the "virus" scanner. It looks like it is gone but is hiding away. Cunning.

I have suspected this about 360 for a long time. It is a b*tch to uninstall. That is the first thing I do when I get a new computer to work with in China, deleted all Chinese software. It makes a massive difference once you do but it can take about an hour since Chinese software usually installs lots of 3rd party software without your permission.

Which FF add-on are you referring to? There are several translation extensions, but I have only used Google Translator for FF. It does its job, but I feel like it could be better.
I was Safari for as long as I can remember, always updated, but about six months ago I started using Opera cuz I felt there had to be something better than Safari. Well I've been using Opera pretty steady since then, Seems to work fine for me, but I don't think I do anything very intensive on my computer. Just regular stuff,,,, reading news sites, here on echinacities, download a flick from yts.to, Skype, VPN sometimes (half-assed performance at best).

I use Chrome ..95% of the time....IE or Firefox if I am having an issue with Chrome...all kept up to date.
here with 99% of Firefox always updated, rest with very old version of Opera (ver 12.15) and a tiny bit of IE. Chrome is Ram-eater and not working plug-ins here make it unusable for me.
I've tried a few of the options that were suggested over the last week or so and have had varying levels of success. Mainly using Firefox to get things done. Thanks to Mr A and all others that left a reply.
sometimes there are programmes that have a browser mode built in. i often found that whatever browsing limitations authorities put into effect for regular browsers would not always work on these programmes. Vuze download manager is an example: although it doesn't automatically search in thepiratebay, i could reach it with the address bar where regular browsers couldn't get through.
have a look around your software, and ypu might be surprised which programmes have built-in browsers, and how effective they are.
I would recommend Opera. I used it 100% of the time, no problems for me at all.
I recently got a recommendation for a Firefox version from Mozilla called "Pale Moon', it was said it was faster with some features not commonly used eliminated for speed.
Anybody ever try this one?
maxthon, and uc are the only chinese browsers that comes in english.
aside from that you have sogou, 360, baidu, and qq who all offer browsers in chinese

time for it to be confiscated by CHina, and of course change the narrative, we invented it and it's ours.
I uses Firefox in conjunction with a good VPN. Took me years of trial and error, but I have it all modded out specifically for China with various security and privacy extensions and scripts that allow me to browse the web virtually unimpeded by China's elite cybersecurity warriors. I could create an even more secure browsing experience than I have now, but I would end up breaking too many pages and I feel my firewall is impregnable to any general attack. If I felt I was being specifically targeted, I could always take to to the next level.
