Q: Why are Chinese so afraid of big dogs?

I read sumtin about China not wanting big dogs in cites.. is that because there is no law to pick up after the dog, since they don't pick up after their kids. I have a Collie,, sweetest dog,, I'd like to bring her,,not this trip maybe next time,,,,She's an ice breaker here as everyone like a Collie,, will people stop to see my dog in China?
I've been trying to train her as a babe magnet ,not going too well so far,,,ya'd think that 'Taffy go get a babe' wouldn't be that much harder than 'Lassie go get help' ??

In truth and in my opinion, it's like this. The Chinese when not eating a dog is scared shitless of big dogs and that includes the police. The police have dogs (not many but they do have) and it's another control mechanism, how could they take people down at their whim if the populace have big dogs protecting their masters?? So easy, disarm the public, DONE, that includes dogs... Control, it's all about control. Security and police is 4 times more than it was 6 years ago or more, CCTV camera everywhere I used to think England was bad, but here there isn't a corner, street alley way doorway, complex that isn't under some kind of surveillance... "security"... Right... Puzzled

Chinese often get confused between big dogs and horses, so they are now not allowed on the mainland.

My post is almost 2 years old, I can't bring my dog to China. My GF had a Collie, lost it, but people would jump sideways in fear from it and it was so calm. Its a shame that she lost it. I liked her dog.

Our 3Kg dog will make people go in large circles around is, when I am standing in the lift and old women enter they will often utter a sound of chock. When in the lift my dog always sits next to my left foot facing the same direction as me, he is on a leash, yet sometimes people will chose not to take the lift with us, or they will be stuck to the opposite wall. In that case I like to tap the dog with my heel so he will stand up in all his might (shoulder height is 17-18cm) making people run fast out of the lift.

People are afraid of dogs because of poor education. Dog owners beat their dogs, this means you have lots of dogs that are afraid of people, this will make dogs bite. People know that dogs can have rabies, again because dog owners do not take care of their animals. People have a lot of misconceptions about dogs and disease. We had dinner with a nurse and a doctor (heart surgeon I believe) and the mother in law and one of her friends brought up the topic of the safety of having a dog when you want to have babies. The medical professionals looked like they were caught off guard for questions slightly relating to their profession, however they did manage to bring up a long list of dangers to pregnant women that are near dogs. The MILs friend volunteered her brother as a someone who could take our dog "because their 4 year old loves dogs" (said 4 year old is one of those children that will get killed if you put him in a room with a decent sized dog, pulling ears and tail all the time)

The fear of dogs is irrational, they should my rather fear western dog owners will bitch slap them a bit when they act like idiots around the animals.

In China two views of dogs prevail.

 - a source of food

 - a toy

I can accept dogs being bread for their fur or meat as long as they are treated well. A toy is just a horrible status for a dog to have. Chinese people need to learn that dogs are companions, not toys.

TedDBayer:

Eating dogs and cats unless for survival is just wrong. These animals were never domesticated. They chose and evolved to live with us.

Maybe they are terrified that dogkind will eventually arise from the ashes and exact untold revenge on the population

I avoid any and all dogs in China. I walk wide around even the tiniest dogs because you never know what kind of diseases they are carrying. Face it, this is China, most people here don't take care of their pets. It's easier for them to get sick and spread diseases.

It doesn't help that we have a huge bat population at night in our community. Hello! Rabies anyone?! I've seen bats in big cities at night too. You never know if one will approach a dog, "Do you accept the gift (rabies) that I give you?", and bite it.

We have 3 very small strays running around this neighborhood, and one of them is pretty violent towards others. Well, it was... before they put it down.

Amonk:

There's 4 or 5 at my uni, small quiet ones. The girls seem to avoid them at all costs ("I don't know why they scare me, they just do!"). They are pretty chill dudes, only time I saw them being misbehaved was when a new dog was hounding in on a long timer's food handouts. The big guy got possessive and some neck biting happened. The dogs did, too. :-P

Reading this I feel so lucky that my gf loves big dogs. And muscles. And zombie movies. And doesn't mind that I'm still obese.

Okay I think she might be pretending to like things about me.

It has nothing to do with fear of big dogs or picking up after them.  Fear of large animals is common here because big dogs, or wolves if you head outside of some cities, can carry rabies.  If you do see a big dog (okay you probably don't need to actually panic unless it's got red eyes and breathes fire), you probably shouldn't get too friendly either.  Especially if it's salivating a lot...

there was a large dog on my campus that was quite friendly. But it bit a student who went through a painful course of injections because of the danger of rabies. It then disappeared over winter vacation....... Rumours about what happened the dog were many......

Large dogs would be difficult to keep in Chinese cities due to their size and the fact that it would be cruel to confine them all day - not that pet care is a number 1 proirity for any dog owner i have met.

1, many fears come from past experiences.

2, they don't see the dog, they see the power behind the jaws.

3, fear of large object/animals/human , for instance,  big guys bully small guys

4, some dogs in china are not as friendly as you think

What gets to me is when people tease a dog, throw stones or sticks at it and when the dog does bite defending himself, he is "put down" because he was a "threat".

Dogs? They scream when a wasp enters the classroom. Boys included.

Dogs are tough. I spent four hours interrogating one yesterday and he still wouldn't tell me who's a good boy.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
