Q: Why are 'opening ceremonies' so important in China?
Seems they have them for everything...

It's a part of giving face, it gives the event importance. It also gets people's attention. With all the lights and speakers, noise and distractions, I think you have to go out of your way to have people notice something new opening.

I would say the most important reason is superstition, to ward off evil spirits and iunsure success of the enterpriose opening. And maybe, on a second level, the innate desire to show off wealth for the owners, in a way "FACE".
