Q: Why do Chinese radio stations never play Chinese rock or folk songs?
All you ever hear on Chinese radio stations are cross-talk skits, canto-pop, techno/dance, pop....basically everything except local rock and folk songs. At this stage, I think it's fair to say that Chinese rock and folk has popped its head into the overground and Western rock songs are becoming a popular choice on Chinese TV ads. But where are the Chinese bands? There are so many making a name for themselves both in China and abroad, but they never seem to get any air time. What's up with that?

I dunno but I heard a Chinese ska band in Guilin once and they were absolutely as cool as f**k. Can't say i've heard any decent rock though. As for folk music, it's never really been my thing. Can't stand techno/house/garage or whatever name is applied to the durge created by those musical geniuses pressing buttons on a drum machine in their mother's basements, so I rarely listen to the radio.
As a classic rock fan, I have to say, that most classic rock (and many other rock genres) are based on revolution and drugs, even when the songs don't fall under those categories anti establishment themes run through most.
These aren't the kind of topics a one-party state is likely to appreciate.

Hey, what about Christian rock? China could have it's own brand of 'pro-party rockers', cutting loose in a non-threatening way and holding up an index finger to the establishment. Maybe to turn on a light-switch or something equally helpful.
