Whenever I go with a Chinese person to another city, they insist on visiting some university or other. I went to Hangzhou this weekend, and all we did was walk around a few universities and West Lake. Once I was in Wenzhou with a friend, and she suggested visiting a university, despite it being far away with nothing else around it! The campuses can be quite nice, but I don't get it. Back home, the only time I would visit a school I didn't go to is if a friend of mine goes there. Is it a pride thing, like "my city has so many universities, which makes it awesome"? Are they places with the best scenery in most cities? Are they considered great tourist spots? What's the deal?

I would imagine that since university is still a rare experience for the vast majority of people here, there lies the attraction?
