Maybe their teachers told them, and teachers always right
nevermind.... That was awesome.... OK now to say something so the admin doesn't delete my post... Hmmmm... Errrr.... Yah.... Ummmm.... Because they are gullible?!?! I think that's as good an answer as any!
Many people in the world believe it because they're stupid and don't know any better. I studied Meso-American cultures in college and they didn't believe that the world ended in 2012. Movie directors and television have just twisted the truth to get viewers.
And because NASA and major world media have been spreading stories about the possible end of modern civilization because of a major solar storm in 2012 or 2013.
This is actually a question I asked them about, since every Chinese person I met when I first got to China asked me if I believed the world would end in 2012.
At least in Henan where I was at the time, the answer was pretty simple: they are anxious to practice English with foreigners, but their English is, on average, pretty poor. To solve the problem, they somehow all learn/memorize the same conversation starters.
It's along the same lines as "How do you do? I'm fine thanks and you?" which is the first thing drilled into them at a young age.
They've probably carefully memorized this and are fairly happy just to have said it to you, regardless of your response or whether or not they believe in 2012 (they usually don't believe it and sometimes don't even know what it means, depending on English level).
Where the hell does this rubbish come from, I've never heard it at all, said by anyone only the media and some looney tunes in the media, never a Chinese person, they don't talk about dieing, full stop!
I've always thought that was kinda striking about the Chinese -
they don't have much of a spiritual background, but a lot of them believe this thing about 2012.
Also, 2012 is like, the 4th highest grossing western film in China, so there you go, haha
