Q: Why do they often serve fruit salad with mayonaisse here?

Ordered a fruit salad thinking "this is a safe thing to order. They can't mess up a bowl of chopped up fruit." But I was wrong. Instead of serving it with a yogurt dressing or just natural juices, they smothered it in mayonaise. I almost spat it out when I put it in my mouth. Surely they don't think that tastes good. Wtf?!

Ewww...that's gross..I never had that before. The salads that I get never came with Mayo. YOu should try eating the salad at Mr. Pizza you can make your own and choose your own ingredients topping...specialty sauce.

Because mayonnaise looks like a yogurt dressing. I think rarely the people cooking your food actually taste it. If Gordon Pucking Ramsey has taught me anything, it is to bloody always taste the sodding food while you are bleeding preparing it.

icnif77:

I see your 'tasting' statement in China as 'cook is preparing grilled gian', and keep tasting it, before he's 'ready' to serve the the 'thing'.

In China they would and probably do taste your food with the spoon they are cooking with.

First time I heard Chinese speak, I asked my friend: 'Why are they keep saying 'mayo'? He replied: ''mayo' means 'no' in Chinese.'

Am sure, in more sophisticated restaurant, they would asked you: 'mayo' or 'ketchup'.

In America, we also call mayo, salad dressing.  It's even written as such on some of the labels.    I think the Chinese take it a little too literally.

Scandinavian:

It is mentioned often. US and China have many similarities. Both countries are pretty wacky.

I work in a western restaurant.

The Chinese believe Fruit salad is a salad per se, not as a dessert or standalone snack but as a starter that falls in the same category than Caesar Salad, Greek salad and others.

I have seen this preparation for fruit salad in many international hotels as well.

Moonlake, like you, after being on the receiving end of fruit salad with mayonnaise once  I was very careful to specify NOT to do it again. There are some things that are just not right !!

andy74rc:

Why not right? Don't you too eat cherry tomatoes together with apples and oranges?

sorrel:

not having any regular access to cherry tomato's prior to arrival in China, fruit salad usually consisted of apple's, oranges, pears, etc. and any of many types of seasonal berries. For me, cherry tomato's, when available, would be eaten more with regular (i.e. vegetable) salad.

maybe, but I have met people who become genuinely upset when I class tomato's as vegetables ;o) each to his own.

About classification, I do agree. They are actually fruits. It remains the fact that they do not fit in the fruit platter together with sweet fruits.

At least in my barbarian Western taste.... :)

Thanks Sorrel. Yeah I won't be ordering fruit salad for a while. I'm going to stick to the homemade version from now on!

As long as it LOOKS like what foreigners eat, they'll do it in any way they can.

Foreigners eat Hawaiian pizzas? Let's throw canned fruits on fried dough.

I never tried fruit salad in China because I'm mostly a meat eater, and rarely eat fruits outside of dragonfruit.

When crimochina mentioned that they prepare fruit salads with mayo, I'll be honest when I say I didn't really believe it, or he had bad luck... wow.... this is terrible

I thought mayo or ketchup on top of my pizza was bad, bt on a fruit salad, that's pretty disgusting.  Many places have weird toppings or ingredients they use to try to make something slightly more western, and it usually end up ruining what would be a good salad, steak, bread, or pizza.  I wouldn't even mind if they pulled the recipes off the Internet, but don't ever try to cook me something western you obviously have never tasted before.

Yes, I got served Mayonnaise with my fruit salad at a "Korean restaurant" in Guangdong province.

I think it's because Mayonnaise is Egg Yolk and Oil.   Yogurt is made out of dairy products and many Chinese, like my girlfriend, are lactose intolerant.  That means they gets severe stomache aches and bad poo for hours from drinking a little glass of milk or a cup of yogurt.

So of course they don't serve fruit salad with yogurt and they also don't serve potatoes with sour cream.

Edit: Google shows 90% of Chinese in China are lactose intolerant. Which means 90% of Chinese will get servere stomache aches and bad poo from eating a fruit salad with any kind of yogurt. So of course a restarant isn't going to offer it.

Nessquick:

Understand, But I am very curious, why the hell here in Shanghai, they offer "yogurt drink" after every lunch and they drink it. For me, It is almost unacceptable to have a yogurt after lunch. only sometimes, when i feel very bad from the food I just ate, i go for some thick yogurt. but not those kind sweet, weird taste yogurt milk

A:Your potential employer is right! Demand for Medical exam before granting Z visa is to make sure, you won't be entering China in any abnormal and harmful to others condition.Few days after your arrival to China, you'll be required to complete another ME ... If ME in China will be OK, you'll get a Residence permit stamp into your book some 10-days afterwards. Imagine, you're an employer, who can sponsor my entry and work in China, but after my arrival to China, it would be found I carry some sickness, which would prevent Chinese .gov to issue a Residence permit. Rule is: Z visa should be converted into Residence permit in 30-days after arrival to China.    So, my advice is:"Complete ME in your home country and forward medical results to your employer".Z visa grant will follow shortly afterwards. Employer is not wrong at their demand for the pre-arrival ME from your home country hospital.   -- icnif77
