Because Japanese Army invaded China during World war II, bringing great harm to Chinese people , and it seems that the Japanese are desperately denying that invasion .
Franck3:
It was'nt just Nanking that got raped. Everywhere the Japanese went it was the same story. Too much love of the Emperor. Nanning for instance got burned to the ground when the Japanese left. Look what they did to thousands of Chinese after the Doolittle raid. The Japanese considered every non Japanese as being barbarians. When in fact it was the Japanese that were the barbarians. I lived in the UK during WW11 and I must say the average Englishman hated the Japanese more than the Germans. The atrocities they committed were without end. Fortunately this has all changed. I now find the Japanese to be one of my favorite people. It is hard to understand why they were so barbaric during WW11. All you have to watch are the old Chinese war movies and you will see how the Chinese saw the Japanese. The leader of the Japanese troops was depicted as having buck teeth, wearing glasses and had a Hitler mustache. I have read many books about the Japanese occupation of China during WW11 and I think it would be a rightful gesture for the Japanese to make a formal apology for their behavior during WW11. Franck3

a supersonic missile 5 times the speed of sound that is better than anything America has, way to go Japan, SAMURAI.
Nick, you should read the book The Rape of Nanking and then you'll understand why so many Chinese people hate the Japanese. They basically massacred and raped hundreds of thousands of innocent people back then and committed some of the most horrific war crimes in history. It's really sad. Be prepared for a soppy read!

Franck3:
WW11 did not enhance the Japanese reputation in China or England ,America etc. They raped China. Burned cities to the ground (Nanning and many other cities) They looked at all non Japanese as barbarians and in the end they discovered they were the barbarians. What the Japanese did to China was barbaric to say the least. Now they are a wonderful people.
While the Japanese committed some truly atrocious war crimes (rape, murder, beatings, humiliation, torture etc), the thing that still bothers the Chinese people so much is that the Japanese have not issued a formal apology, or even recognised these atrocities.
Unlike in the West where Germany has again and again apologised for their war crimes (and this has been accepted by all nations concernted), the China-Japan issue is still a massive bone of contention between the two nations and has even influenced the structure of some history textbooks (in both countries), so that children grow up with a natural prejudice.
It's extremely sad to see China's younger generation with such a vehement bias against the Japanese, when the Japanese people are genuinely kind, gentle, polite and courteous.
Still, until an apology or formal recognition is issued, I think the hatred will still continue...
Shining_brow:
"... the Japanese have not issued a formal apology, nor even recognised the atrocities". What a load of CRAP!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_war_apology_statements_issued_by_Japan This wiki article outlines the NUMEROUS apologies the Japanese government has made since WWII! It specifically includes China in the list! The reason many still hate the Japanese is simple - Chinese TV has a war movie or TV series, showing the Japanese as cruel, merciless animals - EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY somewhere on the TV. The whole idea of hating the Japanese is completely ingrained into the social consciousness. Rather not coincidentally, the Chinese will NEVER admit to doing anything similar at any time in their past - and will NEVER apologise for any atrocities that Chinese military forces have ever done - anywhere in the world (including, and most especially, in their own - NOW - country!)
Common Chinese do NOT hate the Japanese people, they hate the Japanese government and they do make the distinction.
Shining_brow:
No, they don't make the distinction... if you press them about it, they MIGHT get around to saying that - but when it comes to talking about it, it's the Japanese as a people that they hate - and have no idea what they're really like as a person!
I guess it's similar to America...... many people hate 'America', but all this means is they dislike the government and its way of doing things. They don't necessarily hate the American people.
Neighbors hate each other, not only Chinese hate Japanese, but Pole hates German, Indonesian hates Malaysian.
But that's not true. It's about history, what happened before, but who cares, happened is happened let go~ One of my best friends in Germany is a japanese girl!
I will not say I don't like American because one of my American colleagues is really arrogant and doesn’t show respect about Chinese and Chinese culture, only knows to complain. I will not say I hate Canadian because I dated one and he was so selfish and showed no care about me.
I don't hate a nation, I hate who treats me like nothing.
Will you like the ones break into your house, kill your family, take over your belongings, and want to slave your children?
How will you feel to them at present or even 50 years later? And how do you feel like to the ones do the crimes and to the crimers' children?
Think about it then you will understand!
Whoa Juneyao, your house got broken into by Japanese, your family killed, your belongings taken and your children enslaved? Was any of this RECENT?
Chinese need to learn to let go of the past [like Europe has already], but this is something they can never do.
Well Ludovico, it did not happen recently, but it did happen. Someone cannot get over it, because it hurts too much, it didn't happened to me but it happened to my parents when they were young, I will not ague with my mum when she said no Japanese in the family, even I had a lot Japanese friends who respect Chinese culture, respect me.
And if u paid attention, u should notice Declan's answer. The first one who answered this question.
If Japanese president would have kneeled down in front of one of the monuments either in Nanjing, Shenyang or other city in China like what former german president Schroeder did, it will be much easier for Chinese to learn how to let go.
the hatred is because japanese wanted to conquer china and other small island with it. while doing this japanese showed one their most cruel natural anyone can ever seen. they killed, raped, slaughter, prisoned, lotted as many chinese they can do. they did whatever they could do..... As japan can not forget Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombing. the same is the case here they can not forget what japanese did..
one reason might be jealousy ..
japan is so small still enjoys better freedom, governance, technology, healthcare, education, culture etc etc ...
ambivalentmace:
yes and the smaller country kicked their ass, not the first time china has lost to a smaller army , want be the last either.
In the high school classes that I teach, I once talked about dating, and I tried to divide preferences according to gender.
Among the numerous choices (what if he's fat, what if she's poor, etc...) almost ALL the girls said they would never date a Japanese man, because they were too small, abusive and old fashioned.
The boys? Didn't really bother them...
Wenna, i find you very selective of China's history. When people ask for symbol about your countary, you are unable to answer. You don't know about your countary legacy, you even refer people to a 'Merican website (Google)!
But when it comes for a reason to hate, you not only have memory of the tragic past, but act like it's your own. It may be your parent, but cheesus christ is all about forgiveness. Can you hate the child of the child of an atrocious person? Hate the one who commited a crime, not an innocent child.
Why? I tried googling it up, but could find no answer... Yes, i admit, 'Merica doesn't have the answer for everything
Hello 'Merica friend,
I don‘t get it, if u have any problem with me, sent me a message, don’t need to shout out on other people‘s site.
Have I ever mentioned I hate anyone? Japanese? Is my English so bad that u misunderstand? And I don't feel ashamed to use google because it's 'Merica, and I know what's my country's legacy!
“cheesus christ is all about forgiveness” seriously? Say it to other people when u can do it urself!
Btw, I thought u r European, as ur English is really……
Why does chinese hate japanese?
Why do Chinese hate Japanese?
(On an expat forum hosted in China with Chinese members).
They don't, at least not the educated Chinese. They hate the Japanese government and what they did during what the west calls WW II. The atrocities of Nanjing are erroneously believed to be the worst act of aggression perpetrated by the Japanese during WW II. However, that is also not true. The Japanese did far worse in places throughout the Pacific Islands, places like the CNMI, Guam, Palau, Solomon Islands, Philippines etc where 70 to 85% of the indigenous population was exterminated.
The Chinese constantly over play their hands.
Because of what their grand parents told them...They cant let go the past..though not all...In fact chinese does not hate the japanese just can't easily give up the past(history).
