I did see one generic video about a year ago. They were playing this rappers song on the bus. He was rapping and in the video they were trying to imitate the west version so they included 2 dark skinned girls to dance in his video. It wasn't a breakout it was just on the bus. WHy hasn't CHinese rappers broken out yet?
Maybe Chinese at least understand what is music and what is anoying repetitive crap even worse that pop.
All they can do is copy and imitate.
We had an English competition a few years ago in Guilin. Students had to present a short play. Had to last no less than 5 minutes but no more than ten.
Well, for two weeks I helped this one group of students practice their play. It was an original. We met almost every day at lunch time in an empty classroom to practice.
Then came the night of the play!
I endured scene after scene of "excerpts", like "A scene from 'Jane Eyre'" or "A scene of 'Monkey King'" etc. NOTHING with a beginning, a middle and an end.
Then came my group!!!
I almost cried when instead of their original work, they recited a scene from "Sense and Sensibility". When I approached them after the play, and asked them what happened they told me that their teacher was very angry at them and said that their work was not good enough and to instead do that scene.
I was utterly disgusted. Teachers here penalize creativity, and actually make kids "copy" and reproduce what others have done. Eventually, the kids just stop trying.
This is why it will be a long time before we see anything truly original or breakout in almost any genre.
I don't think this applies to rappers only. Forgive me my ignorance, but can you name any Chinese breakthrough music act at all?

Surely they never copied Chinese opera of anyone. You wouldn't would you. Maybe it's good that they only ever copy if their opera is a result of what happens when they try to be original.
Why bother? Everyone would copy the song from a free Chinese website. Within a week there would be 100 Taobao sellers selling the album or single for 30 RMB. The artist would make 500 RMB total on album sales. There would be 20 copycats on youku within a week as well as the original posted 20 times by different youku posters. The only revenue would derive from concert tours, which are, if you ask any touring musician, exhausting. Fights start on tour because eventually everyone is exhausted.
Can they sing? I think black people have the best voices and they can dance to anything.
:
Exactly! Jazz music, if I'm not wrong it's been created by black people. That is a hard music to understand and play. It goes through veins of understanding common people won't ever foresee. It's DNA Creativity at its best. Rap also, it's Revolution and need for Revolution made urban poetry. There are some crap too, but I learnt to appreciate quality through some of its greatest singers like Eminem who happens to be a white guy though I suspect, he's always wanted to be a black guy and maybe even more only to show he is better at rap than anyone.
