Q: Would you help a collapsed person on subway?

So this is situation: rush hour, subway very crowded. Am standing in spot next to seat, am holding onto strap. In front of me are seats, and are all taken. There is a woman sitting down, collapsed. The whole front part of her body is slumped forward, but her bottom is is sitting in the spot. I am not in front of her, but she is slumping towards me, I am standing in front of the person next to her, and she is slumping towards my knee. She stays like this the whole time I am on the subway.

At first I thought she was looking for something in her bag or touching her shoe, but no. Then I thought that the person next to her knew her, but no. This woman never looks at this slumping woman as much I look at her, then I look at the thing she should be looking at.

Worst is that I didn't really pay attention and only noticed halfway through trip. I was thinking of foreigners being scammed and wasn't sure what to do, and by then my stop had arrived.

I left the woman like that.

With the recent turn of events here you probably did the best thing.......for yourself. I feel terrible even writing that sentence but I have to be realistic here. To add to this, my wife would go crazy if I decided to help someone that was in need. She would usher me away quickly to avoid any potential trouble.

It's a sad state of affairs isn't it?

I dont know if i agree..... People get so worked up about a few stories, but also forget that there is over a billion people here so these bad stories are like 0.0001% of the time. I try to act the same as if I were back home. If something bad happens, so be it. Ill be pissed but ill deal with it. I think the fact that you feel guilty about it is your answer. Wouldnt you want someone to help you?? The fact that no one would shouldnt have any bearing on your actions.

I hope I will never walk past a person in need. If I was alone or with one of my expat friends I would help without hesitation, if my wife was with me, her safety would need to be considered.

Honestly and realistically I'd help but I'd make sure someone or something recording. If will a friend I'd record first or make sure I'm helping after the fact. In a panic I'd help then split. If I didn't I'd feel guilty about it day and night.

Of course I would. Another human being in trouble? Why not?!

Oh, because they'd sue me? What's this? A low-orbit ion cannon? Neat. They better pray I don't return for their ashes.

This guy is a joke. Most of the news is Chinese people cheating their helpers, with foreigners stopping to help almost every time...

I'd certainly help if I saw someone in trouble, assuming she didn't give the impression of just being a drunken bum, i've helped strangers in trouble against violent conflict on a few occasions, i'm not going to be overly concerned at the threat of being scammed. But If the subway was crowded i'd have first spoken to other passengers and drawn attention to the fact that I was going to check she was ok, that way there'd be no doubt as to whether I was responsible for her condition. If there was nobody there i'd still check she was ok and if she started piping up that it was me who'd hurt her, i'd knock her out and put her back where I found her.

Yes I remember when 18 foreigners walked past an injured child in Guangzhou.

An adult, I will ask someone to call an ambulance. I would offer no assistance other than that.

yeppers, I would help.  I'm not EMT, but I do have a degree in MRI and have worked around ill/injured quite a bit in my life.  I'd definitely respond, just trained to, don't really think I could not.  Pavlovian response kinda thing.  Sue me if u like.

There was or is a really good story on chinasmack about a good samaritan in a similar situation and how it was indeed a scam and a set-up.  Fortunately she held her ground but she was arrested I think and the matter went to court and the scamstress demanded something like RMB 40,000 for moral suffering.  At that point, someone or something surfaced to reveal that the 'accident victim" was a professional scamstress.

I for one will just move on.

First i would access the situation to see what is really going on and what i could do to help.

If you wanted to help but had doubts it could be a scam you could always get the video camera from your phone and film yourself before....?

Nope.

F##k 'em.

It's a precarious enough place we occupy in this country anyway.

I would just not take the risk that it is a scam.

It's sad because if it were literally anywhere else I would step in and have often done so.

Why would a collapsed person need help to get on the subway? Shouldn't they go to the hospital? HaHa
