I need to buy some jewelry urgently and sadly I have to do it in mainland China, going abroad is not an option. Anyway I figure one of the larger chains like Luk Fook, Chow Sang Sang or even Love&Love would be my best best for genuine merchandise.
Since I have a set budget I want to know if you actually bargain in these larger stores? And if bargaining is a-ok, then how much can I expect to bargain? I guess it's not the same as in fake markets and with street vendors where 1/10 of the original price is the guideline.
Also if anyone has any suggestions to other legit jewelry stores in Shanghai I'm also up for suggestions.
...Can you bargain for prices in Walmart, Carrefour, or RT mart?

While in China, do as Chinese do and you will be right 100 % of the time.
In regards to bargain in a large jewerly store chain, or elsewhere, you will not really know until you try it. And will be surprised, for the three mentioned above, and a few others like Parsons, etc, (mainly department stores and supermarkets), there are thousands out there that will engage in bargaining. Just keep in mind that sometimes as a result you may not end upo with a price reduction, but with a "gift" or samples thrown in, that you would not have gotten unless asked for a price reduction.
My GF is quite succesful at this, and will ask for a price reduction almost everywhere we go, and gets it too !. And, of course, gets turn down in a few places also, but at those sometimes she just walks out without buying a thing.
A few years ago a friend from USA bought a set of marriage rings at a large jewerly store. One engagement ring and two married rings. The total price was close to 5,000 Rmb. His GF asked for a discount, they said they did not discounted merchandise, price was fixed. Too bad, she said and started to walk out. She was called back before she reached the door, nd offered a 10 % discount and a cute pendant if the three rings were purchased. They did buy them.

Jewelry stores have large markups. You can bargain. Not sure why this answer was voted down.
Nah man. You can't bargain in brand stores. It's not like buying from a small shop where the owner serves you and has the power to give discounts.
Contrary to xunliang.... you CAN bargain in chain stores... but only on days where the manager/owner of the relevant store is present, and there is huge profits to bargain with.
Btw. If you "urgently need jewelry" then maybe what you really need is to calm the fuck down and have a beer.
My GF didn't bargain enough. I found I could always ask for a better deal and get it, the hard part was getting the GF to give them my offer. I actually like being a prick when I do this. Sell or I go....
I managed to bargain down the cost of a bracelet at a relatively large jewelry store in HK - I'm guessing it's also possible in the mainland but probably situationally dependent.
at least ...minimum 30% off ticketed price
try for 50%, make the deal at 30%. no less!!!
This is my roleplay table for Bargaining, TIC edition*:
Roll a 20D dice, add in your Charisma score and substract your foreigner score (total should be -5, but you may add 5 if you can speak truly good mandarin).
20+:
The sales girl is hypnotized by your charms. She will "pay" for your item (most likely will scour the stocks for a lesser version of it) if you will take her out to dinner. You may accept the offer (then roll a whole bunch of unhappy dices), or pay for 40% of the price.
18-19:
The sales girl looks confused, but finally nods and says she needs to ask her manager, despite her colleagues looking quite surprised. 10 minutes after, she comes back and says 50% is fine but you need to pay cash and will get no receipt.
14-17:
After a tedious argument, the sales girl finally agrees to concede a 20% discount. It seemed a bit too easy, as she seemed quite prepared to concede the discount anyway. Maybe you could do better.
You may take the offer, or reroll for 1 final time. If this is your second roll, then the 20% discount is final and consider yourself lucky.
8-13:
"Sorry, this article is a new model (or whatever the excuse), I can no discount". After your second of third attempt though, the seller starts to feel embarassed at the sight of you making a fool of yourself. You obviously aren't a natural and the can feel it. She concedes a 5% discount.
5-7:
You have no patience, and aggressively make clear you have no time for this shit, adding you know for a fact whatever they have isn't worth a tenth of the tag price. The seller blushes, and plays the "bu dong" card - which might be true in this case. Game over, you get no discount.
0-4:
The seller agrees to concede a 50% discount on the tag price. Congratulation, you are now the owner of some fake/second hand/defectuous good with an inflated price. The merchant has been dying for ages to an easy prey like you.
*TIC version means there's truly no good roll, only a perception of a good roll.
So I went to the jewelry store today, looked around, and it turns out the thing I wanted was discounted 30% as part of a Christmas campaign, I didn't bother bargaining in this case.
Thanks for all the answers!
They have policies, you will find out the range <no more than 30% off>
