I'm aware that those repatriating after working in China can do this without too much trouble. I'm wondering about for those of us who no longer work but remain in China for whatever reason.
Does anyone know about or have experience with this?

Dr SB, you should get into memes more. I love it. Have a unicorn thumb.
To avoid all those worries and problems, I have the SSA do electronic deposit of my benefits at a bank in USA, and from there, as needed, I wire transfer the money to my bank account in China. It has worked for me for the last 9 years without a problem.
you never get payments into social security or any other fund in the country of China back to you after no longer working here, you do in Korea and Japan, They say you can get it back, but I have never met anyone who has gotten their money back after working China as foreigner and then leaving the country.
Social security from America just needs a bank account with direct deposit which is only available in China in Hong kong, Bank of China Hong kong has direct deposit but not the mainland. Bring a business card and your passport and Hong Kong will open the account. If you have an account already in America, you can process your social security application and send payments all online while you are in China without leaving, you used to have to go the US embassy in Beijing, not necessary anymore because you have to have a bank account. Social security does not print checks anymore for anybody.

One of my mates colleagues got his contributions back a few months ago in Guangzhou. I haven't had any luck from him tracking the guy down.
I have 6 years of contributions paid up so there is a tidy sum sitting there that I probably won't be able to claim in my old age. It would be more useful now.
I plan to head to the local dole office later this week and check the lay of the land. I will post updates here of others that may find themselves in a similar situations having given up working.

yes let me know, I have 5 years in the system before I hit the 5 year rule here and the next year they got rid of the 5 year rule.
iWolf:
I will get to the bottom of it. You have a tidy sum there too.

US Social Security for expats in Asia is handled by their office in the Philippines. Contact info on internet. Pretty easy to work with when I consulted them about my SS.
iWolf:
Thanks for your answer however, I'm not American and I'm talking about social security payments made to the Chinese social security organ.....you make them too (if you have a work permit). I doubt an American department in the Philippines could help very much.
My bad. Your post says social security and you’re an expat. I made an evidently erroneous assumption. BTW, I’m not employed specifically in China. I’m an American CTO based out of the USA ensuring our American and European clients receive their products as ordered. I spend an inordinate amount of time in China as a result of manufacturers with Chinese characteristics.

Don't sweat it mate. My question is probably a bit obscure. Thanks for your efforts anyway. That info will have been handy for someone.
