Q: How often do you actually eat Chinese food?

When I first arrived I felt the need to eat it all the time and felt a bit guilty when I ate western food because I was in a foreign country. But now, after more than two years, I don't feel any guilt when I eat western. I do enjot Chinese food though and eat it probably 4 or 5 times a week.

If I am in "Western Steak House Restaurant" I will most often order a noodle or rice dish as I know the western food will be expensive and disappointing. Breakfast at home is pretty much like back home, lunch and dinner at home is usually some euro/asian thing. When WE eat out, pretty much always Chinese. When I eat out. McD or Burger King, not because of the food but because I don't want to spend a lot of time on sitting alone eating.

Western food in Beijing is really good. You can find some really well prepared, good quality western food here. A new bagel shop opened in the main bar area and they bagels are amazing.

70 for a bagel. That is more than many people earn in a day.

In my early days, almost everyday unless I was home and had the chance to cook myself.

And I did and had to eat sometimes in really shitty places.

Nowadays never. I eat home as much as I can, and I always carry couple of snacks with me (mainly Granola Bars) to fill in lunch in case I'm outside all day long.

I have grown a total disgust toward Chinese food, it's shitty oil and MSG used for cooking and the non existing hygienic rules during its preparation. And this is true for every single Chinese restaurant.

Scandinavian:

Yesterday I ate in a Dim Sum restaurant. One of the dishes on the table was steamed vegetables. After one bite, my lips where well oiled. Why the f*** could they not just at least let the vegetables stay healthy?

Agreed. I very rarely eat Chinese food now. After three years I can't stand it. I may get a bread stick or a pancake for breakfast if I'm up early enough! Otherwise, I make toast or a sandwich at home. I eat out at Western restaurants maybe four times a week. Kunming has excellent choice.

Chinese food ? - Against my will almost daily.

Western food ? - Against my will almost never.

As Scandi say, western food here is a punishment for wrongdoing in some of our past life, so only acceptable is fast food sometimes. Or of course, home made , usually crossover , but sometimes pure Czech food, from available ingrediences.

I have observed one thing now. I am working for one company, and workplace is in Army place - Firefighters training centre. I was thinking as from my young age, when I've served my 12 month in army training, the food was there 2nd worst in my life. after chinese  cheap food. But here, it is surprisingly tasty and good. The broth is crystal clear and very tasty, veggies are not swimming on oil, ok, the meat is kid portion, but still ok. And I do not think they use MSG. So, seems like I got a nice work place.

Chinese food everyday at every meal, for more than 3 years. I'm happy with a rice bowl and some vegetables. Yes, like a pig ^^

But... Since it opened, I go to the Subway next to my workplace once a week, for the good salad inside a good bread with a bit of cheese ^^ Occasionally (like, once in 3 months), I will get some French fries at KFC/McDo/whatever. Got 3 pizzas in 3 years. I eat the stuffs my parent send me twice a year.

Every day, dammit.  I love Asian food...all of it.  Especially Chinese.  But not in China.  Chinese food, as presented in restaurants here, is really bad.  Every dish is the same.  Pure rubbish.

At least some relief is available out here in Xinjiang...the Uyghir restaurants offer a real alternative to the oil and salt drowning Chinese muck.

The Uyghir food is pretty good, but their standards of hygiene are very poor however.  The Han Chinese don't like eating Uyghir food because they think it's dirty and unhealthy.  HAR!

I can't find anything in the supermarkets here that I want to buy, so shopping for food on Taobao is a real goal.  Gunno try it soon...after the winter holidays. Then we can do some home cooking.  And eat with some real utensils.

I'm thinking bacon and ham, cheese, canned tomatoes, kidney beans, sauces.  Stuff like that.

Anyone got any experience with buying food on Taobao?

BHGAL:

http://www.nogogo.cn/   ...  I have been tempted to try this place...haven't yet. hate to think what delivery for you would cost.

But I have a stepdaughter in Shenzhen so someday I hope to get her to receive some delicacies for me.

Only if and or when I get desperate for something and that hasn't happened YET!

Do you ship everywhere? At present we only offer our delivery service within China. For local delivery near the Shenzhen area please check our delivery table for rates and timeframes. For orders outside our local area we use express shipping and usually they can take anywhere from 3-5 days, so frozen products and fresh food will only be delivered during the winter months. All non perishable products can be shipped anywhere in China anytime of the year.

Everyday and almost every meal. I hardly every eat western food from restaurants as it is a poor representation of what it should taste like. My GF cooks about 50% of the time, I cook about 25% (usually western comfort food or BBQ) and we eat out 25% (almost always Chinese or Japanese)

everyday and almost every meal. I treat myself to one western meal a week, usually on weekend. My wife and I do most of the cooking at home.

Never if I can help it. Sometimes I eat the street breakfast.. pancakes or whatever. Generally just cook at home or eat out about four times a week. All Western.
