My contract says if I give notice I need to pay the cost of the visa which is fine but it also says if I quit for any reason I will not receive a letter of release. I saw this prior to signing but there was one condition I came for and they just interpreted it to benefit them which was the working hours. They are telling me that hours are done by 60 minutes and not a class period....which would leave me open to teaching 28 classes a week. I turned this offer down previously and the owner said yes normally a class period is an hour but they can't pay me same salary for less money.

Do you actually read the contract before you sign?
Or question/negotiate on every aspect of the contract?
Posters here have been helpful and supportive yet you come back on a regular basis with contract questions: many of them very similar, demonstrating that the basics have not been addressed at the correct stage in a contract negotiation.
Are you on a 'Z' visa, as many many many posters advised not only you but other people as well over the last 12 months and more?
If you are, SAFEA is your first port of call.
Maybe ask yourself if you are suited to working in China as you said you were - to quote a previous question of yours, a 'teacher of colour', and most posters here know of the extra challenges that non-caucasian foreigners face and how Chinese employers like to wriggle out of assumed responsibilities unless they are otherwise spelt out clearly.
by all means good luck in your future, but please show that you have learnt from the problems you and others on this site, have encountered enough times in the last 12 months.

Otherwise goodwill from posters changes quickly to just plain ignoring them.
And there has been enough anonymous trolling on this site for anonymous posts to receive the answers they deserve - i did see the same question posted anonymously at the same time.

I never found the responses helpful and if I feel my question is relevant. I want to leave and have seen that by law you must get a letter my contract says specifically they will never get it. Responses are always general and never specific to my question. Like go to SAFEA, looked them up no valid info I am living in a small town. If it was simple to tell my boss I am done provide the letter I would not keep posting and I am sure if I leave and get banned people will say you should have done this. Point is if you are too busy keep it moving if you are negative then that does nothing for me either, this is a public forum. I have not seen this question asked specifically with a school putting in the contract a letter is not provided.

are you legally employed on a 'Z' visa / RP?
if so, then you are legally entitled to a release letter
go to the office that issued your RP with a trusted local friend, if there is not a SAFEA office in your town, or go to the nearest one to you.
if you are not legally employed on the correct visa, more fool you for accepting these conditions after there being many many many posts on the dangers of working illegally.
if you had read around similar posts to yours, it is easy to pick up the information about the whole area.

Thanks I am here legally come to find out they want to terminate my contract. But they are telling me now they will only give me the letter of release if I have another job lined up. I am waiting till Monday to see what the outcome is. But I will take your advice and go to the same place I received the Resident Permit.
They are legally obligated to give you a letter of release, IF YOU ARE WORKING LEGALLY.
If they give you any BS about it, contact your local SAFEA branch.

Not too long ago, I was in an Bash and Trash Expat chat room for about half an hour where I was repeatedly insulted, told that I was stupid, that I couldn't think properly, mocked, cussed at, etc. It was the usual fare from the Bash and Trash Expats. I remained calm and eventually asked the question, "Why do you Bash and Trash Expats hate The CFTU?" I knew the question would get an interesting response. It did. Foul language, insults, lies, misrepresentations, hatred, condemnation, and more. But woven throughout the numerous insults was the most common answer: "We don't hate what does not exist!"
I replied by asking how they knew that The CFTU did not exist. I told them that if they could not give me some rational reason for denying his existence, then their position is held by faith. In that case, why would they condemn me for my faith in The CFTU?

If you are legal, (work permit, FEC, came onca Z visa) then they are required by law ti provide you eith a letter of release.
