So if and when I get this letter how long is it valid for, before having to go through the whole rig ma roll process again from scratch
how long can i wait before applying for another post, or do i need to apply to another before current one expires or is there a cooling off period, where i can sit back and relax
can i leave china with the release letter and take 6 months off
its my first residence permit you see (so excuse the ignorance)
if i quit this job, does the residence permit expire too, or can i go to another city and work until the residence permit expires
yes yes yes , the post is a bit all over the place
this place does wreck your head after a while
and this is the only place to get solid advice
thanks

As far as I know, you will have 30 days from the date of the chop on the letter to find a new position. Any longer than that and I would assume you will have to do the whole process again, depending upon which province/city you are in.
Cue Mr incif77......words of wisdom please, anon.
- RP: I'm not sure about requirement 'RP must be canceled after resignation' - in 2012, RP wasn't canceled in Liaoning, and last year in Fujian it was required (SAFEA's info). In both examples I didn't finish the Contract;
- you need RL and FEC Cancel Cert., if you want to apply at another employer, so they can extend your RP (no China exit).
RL is also needed, if you exit China. Your next job will ask you for RL. I believe, in order to get new Working permit, employer must submit RL from the last job;
There aren't any time limits, i.e. 'expiration of RL'.
You can stay out of China as long as you want, but as soon you'll sign new Contract, your employer will need RL and FEC Cancel Cert. in order to get new WP and Invitation letter, both docs. needed for new Z visa.
If you resigned, you'll need both docs. in order to change PSB's records and get new FEC in new city of work. There will be no changes in your RP, i.e. you can work in new city/Province till the expiration of RP, which will be extended by new employer, who must be authorised by SAFEA to hire foreigners. You must see PSB (Exit-entry police) in new city of work, who'll adjust their records.
I didn't read Chinese law, and most of the things I write are either my experiences or my assumptions.
Nobody ever told me here, I'm wrong with counter example.

Whatever you do, don't call SAFEA!
I had a friend who called SAFEA because his schedule was wrong. An honest and noble man. This teacher had been promised a morning-only schedule by the outgoing dean in a signed letter bearing the Dean's personal seal. The new dean however insisted that he would need to take afternoon classes on wednesdays.
SAFEA swore on their honor to assist this man in speaking to the new dean and sent six SAFEA guards with him as an honor guard. However, when he showed the letter promising the schedule to the new dean, she tore it up and threw it on the ground. The SAFEA guards sent to protect him turned their SAFEA Tasers on the teacher and seized him at once. Betrayal!
This man spent the next two weeks in a dark cell. SAFEA promised him that if he confessed to conspiring against the school, his life would be spared and he would be allowed to take the vows and serve out the rest of his days as a man of the China Scam Watch.
In front of the entire student body he confessed to crimes he did not commit. Yet where mercy was promised, none was given. The new dean had the hangman waiting and in front of a cheering crowd the confessed traitor was given his punishment.
No one ever found out what happened to him.

I'm talking out of my own experience, and you like to write lengthy edit: 'lies' in proper Englo under 'nobody knows me' cover.
Lack of 'news' about STFU?

It is well documented that incident with SAFEA i just described inspired a similar scene in a popular book/TV series. So if I'm lying, then millions of readers & viewers must be lying too. Do you really expect us to believe that?
1. 30 days
2. You do not have to wait at all, you can apply for a new job whenever you want.
3. You can leave any time you want.
4. RP is tied to your job. New job or new city, you need a new RP.
icnif77:
4. Not true!
You can work in new city/Province with an old-non expired RP, but you must visit PSB in new city, which will just adjust their records. No changes in your passport/RP.
That happened, when I moved from Liaoning to Xinjiang in 2012.
Spiderboenz:
4. Yes, true.
Even within the same province/city, it's "new job, new RP." Maybe it is a new law, or they just started enforcing it, or it is something only local to Jiangsu , I don't know.
icnif77:
OK, then my assumption on other thread was correct. Law might changed.
I had to cancel RP, when I changed job in Fujian going to Henan. Fujian SAFEA told me, RP cancelation is required.
but my company wont give me the relase letter until the contract ends in june
if i go now then i wont get the release letter, pollution is too much here in beijing and want to go further south (shenzhen) after the spring break
having to wait until june to get it would be a disaster especially in shenzhen (and their visa policies)
so how to go about it,
icnif77:
By Chinese law, Co. must submit RL and FEC Cancel Cert. to you (or your new employer) in 30-days after your last working day.
If you won't complete the Contract all that is questionable. School might have reasons to refuse to give you both docs., and you're looking at exit from China.
If you'll resign, submit Resignation notice and respect resignation time written on the Contract, i.e. you can't walk out tomorrow morning. Also, write resignation reason(s) on RN as 'I'm an asthmatic. Need fresh air'.
Usually resignation notice time is 30 days or longer. Read your Contract and see stipulation about that.
When you respect RN, SAFEA might help you, and make your employer respect Chinese law, too.
You can also dial SAFEA, and ask them for an advice. They'll tell you your options right away.
