Well, the kidnappers are demanding an 11 million USD ransom just for the Chinese tourist! Damn! That's RMB66 million! You think the ransom will be paid?
Am I the only one who dusted of the old abacus and calculated the value of the Chinese population to 9,31E+16CNY at todays exchange rate. ?
I read that just now in the Shenzhen Daily news paper. I don't think their family can pay that amount.
It's like normal bartering : the initial price is at least thrice the actual price, it's just to start somewhere. Here, it's human life bartering, urk... The poor tourist and his/her family are in for the worst nerve-wracking ride. I hope it will somehow end well.

Pretty cold of you to make it just about the value of the hostages.
Doubt that the family can pay that kind of ransom. They have 2 hostages and one of them is a 40 year old Filipino. Not to say that she is worth less but it would appear that out of the 2, the Chinese one would be worth more because the kidnappers may think China is full of rich people since they can afford to travel.
Need joint Special Forces Team (Phil,PRC,US,Malay(to show multi-national resolve/cooperation)) to locate kidnapper's lair and rescue hostages (if possible) and capture ALL kidnappers & accomplices. Bring them in front of a Malay court. Try them. Sentence them to death (if can prove reasonable guilt) and few days later execute them on the public square.
WE SIMPLY HAVE TO MAKE DELIBERATE* (planned) VIOLENT CRIME NOT WORTH THE RISK.

They did that some years back and killed the leaders but with these type of terrorists, one dies and another takes over. So the whole thing starts all over again.

True. We must simultaneously address the root causes of over-population/poverty/lack of education. If we fail to address the root causes we will always breed desperadoes who will be compelled to throw away their lives (and others) supposedly for a few shillings but actually are just acting-out from a sense of hopelessness / extreme desperation.
