Hi all, I'm new to China, coming in September for work and first few days will stay in hotel - I would REALLY appreciate if anyone could suggest or even give me landlord/agent contacts in Minhang (or nearby 'cause my office is going to be in Minhang) to rent a small cozy 1BR apt (I plan to spend 3000-5000 RMB/month). I've read numerous horror stories about renting in China so I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me with this.
Thank you!!
You should still ask your employer. They might not provide you with housing, but if they're unwilling to even help you find somewhere or point you in the right direction, they're probably not a company worth working for. I can't believe no one in the office is willing to help you if you don't speak Chinese.
You have not said if you can speak Chinese or not - which will make a big difference.
Depending on who you are working for, your employer should offer assistance for your first place - you may decide that it is not suitable and move after that.
If you are a teacher, your school should provide accommodation as part of the contract, or your liaison should be on hand to help when you arrive.
If you are working for an international company, your company should have arranged some accommodation, or at least someone to help locate a place you when you arrive.
only you will know what place is suitable for your needs and this can only be done on the ground.
your best bet is to contact foreign colleagues in your company - they will have the most reliable information.
You should ask your employer for help with renting an apartment.

They (the company) will have someone to translate for me, yes, but not diving into various suspicious situations/questions/issues re: renting in China, that's why I asked for trusted landlords/agents.
If you don't mind a bit traveling by public transport, you may get own, not shared, flat for that 3k max. with furnitures and so on but a bit far from you work location. You may do your shopping there and take it to home. no need for living just on the corner with starbucks and City shop. You have to see more places and choose which you like, but as you are new here, it will be not easy for you. Ask your employer to help you. I would like, but probably don't get much time for that, as I am living on opposite site of Shanghai , with family. good luck.
The Agents do not have have good reputation to swear by in China... you can never really trust them completely. hell, I lost around 3000 in a bad rent deal, which was done by my house agent and supposedly a good friend.
maybe, use Google translate and check out www.58.com, it is probably the biggest house agent company.
I don't think anyone here would share a details of their agents and accept a responsibility of what might have in store for you. So.... Call your company.
Another option is to go to SmartShanghai or Craigslist and look for other Expats that are leaving good apartments before their lease is up. It's very common. Then you don't pay the agency fee or deal with the agents themselves. This is how I found my 4000 RMB per month 1br near Xujiahui.
I would also say, don't rule out the idea of getting a room in a shared apartment. You get a lot more for your money, and it's good to have a roommate who knows the ropes when you first arrive, and avoid the hassle of the agents that way.
One more thing, Minhang is not a very desirable district. There isn't a lot to do there, and you'll find commuting in SH via metro is pretty easy (Once you get used to the crowds). If I were you, I would find the closest Metro station to your office, and look for places in Gubei or Xuhui on the same line.
