Q: Transfer to another city, paperwork questions

Hi fellow laowais,

I am to transfer from one 1st tier city to another 1st tier city. I work for a big company with branches in many cities and have support, regarding paperwork, but it seems a good idea to get second source.

Here are some questions, which I hope some will know answer to:

1. If my visa (Z)/residence permit is issued in one city, can I register apartment with the police, to get that paper "temporary residence" from them, or I need to get work permit in the new city firstly.

2. I was told that in order to transfer, I need new work permit in new city, for which I need to present following documents: degree, no criminal record from current city and canceled work permit in current city, for which I get "cancellation paper" or something like that. With this 3 documents, branch in new city may apply for new work permit in new city. Could somebody please confirm this.

3. Finally, I have Z Visa (RP), valid for months to come. Do I need to reapply for new Z Visa in new city, or I need to reapply only once this is about to expire.

Is that all or there are some other things, I need to take care of, like for example new medical examination. I stay with the same company, just relocating to new city and new branch within the company.

Thank you for support.

1. You need to have your residence permit for the city that you are working in.  You can have a valid RP for BJ, but if you are living in SH, you are illegal (technically).

2.  Yes, that is correct.

3. For a new job/new city you need a new RP.  anyone who tells you differently is lying to you.
