Q: Was anyone else suprised to see so many Western candy bars readily available here?

I did not expect to see Snickers, Kinder Bueno, Kinder Surprise, Ferrero Rocher and many other chocolate bars and snacks so readily available at most big supermarkets in China. 7-11 is great for Western-style treats.

There is no Chinese equivalent. Sure there are knock offs but these candy bars are a Western thing. The local snacks are more in the style of eating a steamed sweet-potato. (which probably also explains why some of the geriatrics still have teeth despite lack of dental care)

I wasn't surprised. Who doesn't like a Snickers.

But the Snickers here are different to the ones we get in the UK.

Are they different for anyone else?

everything is produced locally to get around import taxes. so ingredients are also sourced locally. I am sure you can also taste the difference between Coke produced different places in China.

Ah, but I have had Mars bars that are produced in different countries, also Cadbury products that are produced in different countries and they do not taste so radically different to the original.

The Cadbury products that are produced here in China, along with other Nestle products do tend to taste the same. As far as I can tell, it is only the Snickers that is different.

I want to know why! Dammit!

Long ago I read that Ferro Roche was hard to get in China and made a nice gift, but I brought Lindt kisses and I see Lindt chocolate here. Chocolate is made for the climate it is sold in, my Lindt chocolate was just puddles in China.
