Q: What do you do for health insurance while you travel back home or around Asia?
So for those of you who travel a lot. What do you do for gap insurance while you’re away from China? I actually make so little here that I would qualify for basically free insurance in my state, but I am not even exactly sure if I am considered a resident after being gone for basically 2 years. Although since, unlike some here, I do file my taxes even while living here I suppose my residence has been maintained.

As I have canceled my subscription to the tax department back home, I have also canceled my subscription to the socialized hospital system. When we go home we are covered by a normal travel insurance. The travel insurance also covers other stuff than medical so if I knock a Van Gogh of the wall at a friends place that will be covered too.
(a small problem with this solution is that maybe a travel insurance company would tell me to bugger home for treatment, depending on what the problem would be, they do cover "evacuation in case of sickness" for some problems)

Scandinavian, I used this type of insurance when I first came here on vacation several years ago, but later found that your odds of getting what you paid for were iffy. The reviews are basically awful for all the companies I looked at. I guess I could buy it, and then let the American hospitals legal team try to get the money from them. With regards to the taxes, I hear you, but I have already pissed the IRS off many years ago and learned that’s not really the path of least resistance in the long run. Even though we don’t have to pay taxes in America while working here, I guess the requirement that we file helps to keep the reciprocity agreement in check.
