Western people eat cows while many people around the world eat horsemeat and in Guangzhou they eat any creature that has not been dead more than a week. So why the uproar about eating dogs raised from birth to be eaten. They are not anyone' pets, and if cooked properly, are downright tasty. Many people have pet rabbits too. So do we also raise hell about eating rabbit meat as well?
Because dogs and humans easily develop emotional attachments. Dogs like being around humans, care how we feel, and willingly give humans their love and trust.
Treating something that wants to form an attachment to you with indifference (see also: babies) is not an admirable trait.
I've probably unknowingly eaten dog meat since coming to China, and I'm not worried. But I'd never watch a dog get killed for me to consume, knowing how much it would have prefered a scratch behind the ears.
DrMonkey:
The same can be said about pigs. They make good pets, with the same level of empathy of a dog or a cat. They are smart and clean, cleaner than dogs actually. The argument itself is fine, but making it exclusive to dogs is not consistent, I think.
Samsara:
I agree that pigs are intelligent and sociable creatures that enjoy attention from humans.
Because most of us have never had an emotional bond with a pig, we can still think of them as farm animals, and not consider their personality. You are right that meat consumption requires a degree of intentional blindness. Most people want to think of meat as a product, not a cute animal that just died. You are completely right about the hypocrisy, but shhh. I love bacon.
Cows, chickens etc were domesticated, raised for food, dumber than nails. My question would be why does something that lives, feels emotions, thinks have to die for me to eat? Do you think they are slaughtered and die in fear? Why are we so mentally advance and yet so brutal on everything? We are killing the oceans, wiping out other species daily, poisoning the air, destroying the planet.
Dogs and cats were never domesticated, they evolved to live with us as partners. Early dogs ate our garbage and warned us of intruders and grew to hunt with us and protect us. It is just morally wrong to eat a dog. As far as I'm concerned you can't raise a dog for food any more than you can raise a baby for food. I think I read that Chinese Buddihsts list dog as one of five forbidden meats. I can understand eating dog for survival but that would be it. I'd turn cannibal first myself.
DrMonkey:
Did you ever saw a cow, a pig, or a sheep about to be killed ? They know very well what's going on, and it's not very pretty.
TedDBayer:
.. never seen, I tried to make that point.
When I was really young I chopped the head off a chicken and watched the body flap around. My grandma then showed me to quietly hold a chicken slash its throat while keeping the chicken calm, less cruel but I never killed anything after that.

TedDBayer:
But dogs are smart and want to please us. As soon as I say " Do you w?" my dog gives the head tilt, trying to understand. I never really had to train mine, she just figures out what I want. I originaly did Sit, Lay, Stand signal, dog just looked, second time I gave signal, she complied. Amazing. My cats don't even come.
I'm trying to make the point that killing for food is wrong, but some is worse.
Spiderboenz:
Actually, recent archaeological evidence has shown that many societies originally kept dogs as a food source.
TedDBayer:
same for eating people, I can see eating people or at least cutting their heads off

I agree with you, the attitude towards dog meat can be hypocritical. Grow up with a pet pig, rabbit, goat, whatever.... Watch any mammal just before being slaughtered, or better, slaughter it yourself. It does not feel very good. I did it once, a sheep, and helped for a pig.
However, dog meat in China and Vietnam have other problems. The origin of the dogs, and how they are killed. Very often, they are not given a clean, quick death : clubbed, stoned, etc . The origin of the dogs is often overlooked, can be a pet of someone. And what that random ate before, was it infected with something, etc... For pig or cow, the chain between the farm and your dish is supposed to be well defined, there are rigorous processes in place. Dogs, nope, it's completely opaque.
See Cosmos - a Spacetime Oddysy Season 1 episode 2, then you'll know.
Dogs are one of the few creates on the planet that understand the concept of "pointing at stuff" (although not very well according to the fury guy by my feet) Even human babies need months of life expirience to understand this concept, monkeys never really understand it. But dogs do. This has to do with how dogs came to be. Dogs only exist because people need them, for safety, for companionship and for other reasons. None of the reasons why people originally took in dogs has anything to do with eating them.
Anyway. Eat what you wanna eat, just treat the animals respectfully before you eat it. Pigs have higher IQ than dogs, they lack the social skills dogs have, but in many ways are equals to dogs.
'In a world like this' where people don't give a shit about human beings and butcher them with guns, missiles and chemical weapons you expect people will damn care for pets? There is no connection but yet has a connection in the end where as human being are in a reverse gear. The weapons of mass destruction will eventually engulf all of us, dogs, cows, pigs and human beings.
last nite I ate my gf... she kept making this funny sound,,,, kinda like,,, mmmmmmm,,,mmmmmm,,,, mmmmmmm,,, oooooh, oooooh,, ooooh, oh god,,, i'm cummmmmming ! which i totally didn't understand, cuz she was already here~
I have four dogs back home, but I distinguish between "pets" and "food". Dogs raised on a farm for food are not anyone's pets. I have no problem eating them.
TedDBayer:
You're an idiot, a dog is a dog. Problem is what is the health of animals eaten. Cows, chickens do well fed on agriculture products. I have never seen a beef farm in China. Chinese will eat anything, that comes from hard times, but people in China are no longer starving. Chinese cant even make good safe pet food. There are still recalls on Chinese based pet foods going on for 7 years. Food scandals are common in China. Chinese need to learn how to cook and what to eat. Chinese eat garbage now.
TedDBayer:
That dog raised on a farm??China doesn't have farms for raising dogs, the dogs could be a pet instantly unless it was abused. Unless the dog turns vicious all it would take is food and some luv to bring the dog around. My first dog was something that was abandoned, should I have eaten it?? I hope you die on a bone splinter.
Could I please have a Lassie burger? What breed taste the best?
Scandinavian:
Lassie will leave you with too much fur between the teeth.
TedDBayer:
My GF lost her Collie in Guilin. A friend was taking care of it. You know how Chinese will not answer questions, she was never able to get the story. My Collie never wanders far from me. I can't see these dogs taking off.
andy74rc:
My wife, huge animal lover, had a big white Maremma Sheepdoglike sweet beast when I first met her. She got it stolen from the vet shop the night she had to leave it there.
Not the vet fault, as he got his shop glass smashed.....
I love dog meat, yes I do.
I love dog meat, how about you?
Get yourself off that pew
And eat yourself some puppy stew.
Shove it in your mouth and chew
And let that gammy taste ring true
Trust me now, I won't lie to you
That lovely meat won't turn you blue
I love dog meat, yes I do.
I love dog meat, how about you?
It's better than the beast that moos
In China it comes in many hues
I love dog meat, yes I do.
I love dog meat, how about you?
If you defame me, then I'll sue
And that is a day that you will rue
I wonder what the nutritional value of dog meat is? I am surprised we do not see buffalo meat on th emenu here since it has almost double the protein as beef and does not taste bad at all.
Retailers torture dogs to sell at higher price.

WTFF!!
The problem with your argument is that you tried to show that there is some kind of contradiction with anti dog meat camp in that "people keep rabbits as pets too, but nobody seems to be against eating rabbit meat." Well, you didn't quite get the job done making the contradiction, so fail. In fact, I'd guess that most people who keep rabbits as pets would not be interested in eating rabbit meat. It's not much of a guess actually, I raised a rabbit and despite being from the country I never imagined shooting the wild rabbits that come to my yard for grazing
The most disturbing thing I saw in China were cages of puppies that were so crammed full, they couldn't move. It was late at night, the cages were thrown off a truck, then men rammed steel poles through the cages (puppies screaming) to lift them on a 3 wheeler. These weren't all street dogs that breed back to a basic short hair, some were long haired. I wanted to do something but realized I'd only make trouble for myself. I later mentioned this to my girl friend (who has a dog) and how upsetting and cruel I found this, of course this is one of those times that Chinese won't talk to me.
A sanctioned slaughterhouse with employees, taxes paid was operating in the 21 st century, that's amazing for a so called developed country.
